Cleaning the inside of wheels

Anyone remove their tires to clean the inner side of the wheels on your car? I just looked at mine, and they look great on the outside, but you can see that "out of reach" areas are ignored. Anyone have a good technique to clean that area? I dont care about removing the tires, but what products? What tools? What to expect.... Thanks!

Absolutely but only when I rotate tires every 5000 miles.
Use wheel brushes available from most detail stores, for cleaning inside wheel well if not removing wheels. Use wheel wax to reduce brake pad dust.

Basically you will need:
Good Wheel Cleaner (to spray and soak wheels, on or off the vehicle)
Wheel Brush/s
Tire Brush
Tire Dressing/protectants etc. to keep tires looking great
Wheel Wax (not car wax)

There are several vendors/sponsers on this forum

If there is a build-up, it may be a challenge to clean. However, if you clean the inner areas of the wheel as you do the outside, there should not be an issue.

Oh yes - whatever brushes, mits, or anything else you use to clean the wheels must never be used on any other part of the car. There are many products, from the big companies like Meguiars, Mothers, etc. to the more exotic (expensive). Some are available at your local parts store, Wally World, K-Mart, Winn-Dixie, etc. Others are available from some of the online specialists, such as Griot's Garage, Autoanything, etc. It seems there are outspoken supporters and critics of almost all of thes products. However, if there were a silver-bullet, we would all know about it and be using it.

I use a "refrigerator brush" I got at Walmart for $5.00. The brush part is long and skinny and fits within the wheel and caliper. The handle is also long. But, the one I have is not very sturdy and only likely to last 10 or so washes. But it is cheap. Just spray on the wheel cleaner into the inside of the wheel and scrub away!

Cleaning inside can be done after removing the wheels only.

+1.
  • $2.99
  • Wheels off car.
  • Apply full strength and let sit for awhile before scrubbing.
  • Use a cone bristle or nylon brush.
  • Not on asphalt, at least not your own driveway.
  • Rinse like crazy.
  • Reapply.
  • Rinse like crazy.
I take no responsibility for misuse.
