DETAILING BLACK COUPE

Hey Guys,

My car needs some serious detailing and I wanted to do everything by hand with microfiber clothes and soft detailing sponge applicators. I have a black car and it has a lot of swirl mark and I mean a lot. I was wondering of the Mothers product line is extremely effective on a BLACK CAR. The following list is what I am going to buy from mothers. Tell me what you think.

Meguairs NXT Soap
Mothers Clay Bar System: $23.39
Mothers Heavy Duty Rubbing Compound: $37.58
Mothers Machine Glaze: $29.02
Mothers Pre-Wax Cleaner — UWS® Step 1: $5.69
Mothers Sealer & Glaze — UWS® Step 2: $7.29
Mothers Pure Carnauba Wax — UWS® Step 3 (paste): $19.99

I really appreciate your help.

Thanks

Thats an excellent start for anyone interested in detailing their car.
Just be prepared for some after your done.

Only thing i'd say is that the list mentioned above ONLY consists of products for the paint, nothing for the glass, chrome, tires, wheels, leather, interior, ect. for a complete detail.

Not going to state which brands are better, as many have their own opinion on them. [Meguiars, Mothers, are pretty good, which is why im using them]

I can apply all these chemicals by hand right? I don't need an orbital buffer right?

You should get very similar, if not the same results using a foam applicator pad. Orbital buffers make the job a whole lot easier/faster and give more surface penatration by applying more revs per surface area, which can be useful especailly when using the compound which needs to be 'worked in' to the paint to polish out the blemishes.

The products your using dont require an orbital buffer, but it is recommended.

Are there any certain motions that I need to know when applying certain chemicals on my car?

Thanks,
Steve

Whatever you do, please don't use Mothers Heavy Duty Rubbing Compound. You would only use that as a first pass following a heavy paint job. Let me tell you, any car can be brought back to life given you have a decent layer of paint i.e. the paint has been worn down by heavy use of rubbing compounds and such.

This forum is full of examples complete with pictures of how folks revived their vehicles (paintwork). Feel free to lookup my and others' posts on the subject especially on black cars.

Your shopping cart is not way off. Simply replace rubbing compound with a good swirl mark remover plus you will need a dual action buffer and suitable pads (email/pm for details).

Expect to put two days effort into the job and you can have spectacular results.

I don't think you should do it with bare hands. They are chemicals and it can show side-effects.
