Performed my own oil change today..(2005 CDI)..easy!

WOW $225 for an oil change from the dealer.

Had a little free time today before Turkey dinner so the CDI got oil change.

Bought the filter from dealer and some Mobil1 5w-40 from Walmart in 5qt jugs.

Granted, its a little more involved than the average car, esp dealing with the filter, but it was all in all nothing major.

Dismounted and cleaned all 4 wheels while car was in the air, man what a difference when the alloys are through-and-through clean and free of brake dust.

1)Car on jackstands
2)Remove all covers (engine covers....torx screwdriver and underbody aerodynamics....8mm socket).
3)drain oil
4)Change filter (strap wrench or special tool)
5)Put dash cluster in "service mode" to oil quantity, quarts.
6)Fill with oil
7)In "service menu" update interval.
8)Put covers back on.

Its about 1 hour of easy work if you like to work on your car and have a comfortable area to do so.

If not, take it to the dealer.

It's even faster to suck it out the top without putting the car on ramps or jacks.

What do you mean when you say update the service interval, in item seven?

Service Menu on dash

The prompt that reminds you miles until service, etc.

You turn key to ignition 1, then strike the trip odometer reset button 3 times, then using up and down arrows on steering wheel, go into service menu and confirm work performed.

BTW I am familiar with the vacuuming out of the oil, I just need to buy the pump, etc. Just drained it from bottom the "old fashioned way" this time.

I also don't like going to dealer because they use 0w-40 oil. It just doesn't get very cold here, and my car is always garaged anyway. I like Mobil1 5w-40.

This sucks!

Bought a Liquiddynamics Oil Evacuator. Has about a 5 gallon tank on it, with a sight guage in litres and quarts. You fill it with a vacuum from a compressor. The hoses are setup for a Benz. You just put the hose, with the 2 o-rings imbedded, into the filler tube, turn the nozzle and the oil evacuates in about 2 minutes.

They retail for around 450, but I called the factory in Wichita and got a deal on a demo.

The DELVAC I presume? It's the best stuff for the CDI... I don't understand why dealers don't stock it.

I keep mine that way, it's work, but it's worth it... I have the wide spokes, so I just reach in there with a soapy sponge and scrub it away every few days!

If not, take it to the dealer.
Got a guy here in Scottsdale that does it for $55... so forget the dealer!

But thanks for sharing the steps with us... I'm sure many DYIers will find it helpful.

I do topside with Griots evacuator and refill via oil filter housing...thanks for idea with strapwrench...probably the best use of that tool by far.

Torque figures

I'm picking up my 06 CDI tomorrow. And will be doing all of the PM on it.

Does anyone have the torque figures for all of the covers (top and bottom) and the drain plug?

Regards,

$55?

That must just be the labor. Good deal.

Regarding torque specs, the important one is the oil filter, it is printed on in, I think 25 n-m.

The underside covers are just screwed into plastic or sheetmetal, so just 'bout tight, use your discretion.

Top covers are a torx screw. In my opinion, no need to use a torque wrench. A magnet is handy to pluck them out after loosening. Just tighten 'bout right, firm but friendly, just don't cross thread.

Drain plug is threaded into aluminum and has a copper washer. Be careful not to lose the washer, or just use a new one (even better). I don't know the torque "spec" I just use common sense. Somewhere between snug and firm, not an once more! 15 ft-lb should do it if I had to put a number on it.

Torx nm

The top cover torx screws are 9nm setting. I use a mini-torque wrench. Don't know the bottom screw, since I use an evacuator from the top. However, get a handful of crush washers and use a new one each time you do the oil. A forum member, KYBENZ sells OEM MB parts, including filters and probably crush washers. You would get the best price from him.

Thanks for posting. You have all have inspired me to start doing my own oil changes on the CDI. Do you see any problem in just driving the car up on ramps ? Is the drain plug on the back of the sump ? I have a pair of the rhino ramps that I use to change the oil in my Vette.

Did the oil change the other week on my E300 DT. Quite easy really:

1) Drive car up ramps
2) Remove engine cover
3) Remove sump plug
4) Allow oil to drain
5) Remove old filter once drained
6) Insert new filter
7) Put sump plug back in
8) Restore engine cover
9) Fill engine (7 litres?)
10) Start engine and check level

Total cost - £20 for the oil, and £5 for the filter
