Which is better in terms of reliability and power?

Between the 2.5l inline 5 turbo diesel Vs. the 3.0 inline 6 24valves diesel motor? I am looking at a few of these W124 series sedans. The 95' models with the inline 6 seem a little nicer with the updated interior and all.....

I think both variants are nice, they both reliable, but there's some catches. The OM606 (inline 6) will give you a troublesome time trying to replace the glow plugs. You have to remove the exhaust manifold to get to them. The OM602 (2.5L inline 5) doesn't have many troubles either, though some models may have timing chain problems, not sure if the 300D 2.5 is included though. So, after that, I'll let you come to your own conclusion.

How often do Glowplugs need to be changed in I live in the moderate climates like CA?

Wink Glow Plug Changes in Milder Climates.

Our '99 got to the point where it had one or two bad glow plugs.

It always started and when it was the coldest in the winter, down in the forties in the garage on
the coldest mornings, it would always start up right away and within seconds, those
cylinders with the bad glow plugs would light off on their own from compression.

I saw no need to have it fixed as it always started although it
wasn't the smoothest running motor for a couple of seconds.

If it ain't broke, why fix it?

Thumbs down Really?

That's all well and good if you're loaded with money, but I'm not, and I simply couldn't see spending
several hundred dollars on something that I did not consider to be necessary to make it
run a little smoother during the first couple of seconds.

so anyways, I won the bid on the 3.0 inline six E300 diesel, hope to see it in a couple of weeks. 200K miles, this is going to be my commuter car to work.

Whether or not you live in a mild climate, they usually go out as frequently as sparkplugs on an '80s Merc. Every 20 - 30K miles, I've heard.

The reason is because the later Mercedes have something called "Afterglow" in which the glowplugs remain hot up to almost a minute after starting the engine.
