Good question.
I suppose it could be attributed to ULSD, but the new fuel has been manufactured for many months now, and at least around here, diesel has skyrocketed relative to gasoline in just the last two weeks.

The station in town is 2.449, 2.549, 2.649 for gas and 2.879 for diesel in NH.
I did notice another station that had premium pegged at 2.669 and diesel 2.699. Guess the 2.699 is priced for the old load. Don't worry, diesel will go up proportionately (sigh).

2.799:2.699 is 1.037 or 3.7%. Unless you are a trucker it is not significant.

I didn't post that price board...I agree that .10/gallon makes no difference.
The stations I frequent most often have had diesel priced about the same as mid-grade for months, with diesel fluctuating in-line with gasoline. However, a few weeks ago they started to diverge; gasoline was going down while diesel was going up, to the point that diesel was priced .50/gallon more than premium (2.57 vs 3.07). Hence my response in agreement with the original poster.
With the CDI's 600 mile range, I haven't looked around recently...but I think gasoline has risen and diesel hasn't. Still, diesel doesn't appear to be cheaper than gasoline anywhere in LA anymore.

I just paid $2.599 at a local Shell station. That's $.20 more than Premium gasoline.
Flying J about 60 miles up I-85 has it at $2.429, less $.01 for Frequent Fuelers.

In the Chicago area, I've observed that diesel fluctuates less than gas. When gas goes up, diesel goes up less. Then the added cost for diesel over premium is less. When gas goes down, diesel goes down less and the added cost for diesel is greater.
Just this week, gas has gone up about 15 cents/gal while diesel has remained pretty steady. So diesel is now only 10 cents more than premium instead of 25 cents more.
None of this makes any sense to me.

If mixes were an issue, then the damage has already been done.
We're into late December, and kerosene is already at least 30% mixed with #2.
These things are so sensitive! A diesel is no longer a "diesel" anymore.

Bluetec or CDi? Cannot decide
The Bluetec engine is high technology and sounds great but has to be treated with kid gloves. One wrong move and you are screwed totally with the warranty. The 2006 common rail injection engine is strong enough but still retains the iron block, can burn kerosene and other mixes and with chipping get to 440 Pound Foot and 240 horses (Kleemann box). The only advantage in the Bluetec car is the 7 G transmission.
The MB dealers are terrible in Toronto (over 90% of City dealers are MB Fatherland owned). They have a stranglehold here and fix the price of MB cars. CD$1,600.00 discount for all E-class, slightly more for the E-63, take it or leave it attitude. They are trying to sell me a demo 6,000 mile 2006 common rail car with a CD$3,000.00 discount.
If they do it in the USA there would be a class action sue for price fixing.

I was originally looking for a 06, but I wanted everything that came on the 07 that have now (KEYLESS GO pr1 and then GPS and xenon lights) I got so desperate that I kept changing what I wanted in order to get the 06 (keyless go not important, xenon lights not important) It go so where it was not the car I wanted at all when I started. Then I was able to find one but it seemed to cost more for a used one than the 07. I was not able to test drive a 06 at the time because I was overseas. So getteing a new car seemed less painfull and ended the search. If you are still looking and have the time to wait (I locked on a loan for 3.9% so I had to act quickly because I had to have the loan closed before 30th of November) try looking on ebay. After I ordered the 07 they had with everything I wanted on an 06
. The 07 seems like a solid vehicle so if and only if you use ulsd you should be fine. I liked the 06 for it's versatility of fuels but the 07 Bluetec looks so damn good in person

After I test drove the Bluetec I was impressed with the fit and finish, use of materials and paintwork. Your 3.9% financing rate is a kicker. The best part of the car is the 7 speed box. It matches the engine 100%. The shifts are imperceptible, like an electric motor. The only complaint I have (maybe particular to the test car) is first gear.
I got a great deal for a 2006 demo with nominal miles and I want a car that is more serviceable and needs less pampering. If I have a choice I would have taken a E 320 CDi paired off with the 7 speed box. Perfection.
It takes 10 days or so to get the car here by rail and as soon as I got it I shall report back to this board.

You can read my mind. I am one day common rail and the other day Bluetec. The Bluetec sounds great and if they have 400 Pound Foot standard I am happy enough with that. I just do not want MB to say my warranty is voided because the red diesel I siphoned out of my house heating oil tank exceeded 15 ppm sulphur. The 7 G is really sweet on the fly complimenting the new engine no end.

More diesel pricing
Went to fill the SLK320 today and saw that regular unleaded is now $1.99 and Premium is $2.18. So far so good. But diesel is still $2.69/gallon! That's 51 cents more than Premium! 
The cheapest I've seen around here is $2.59.
So the trend in the Chicago area continues. Gas goes down when oil goes down. But diesel stays right where it's at. One station near my office has been selling diesel for $3.17 per gallon for weeks.
