Diesel engine maintance question.

Here's the question for all of you diesel owners, is diesel car more expensive to maintain than a petrol car?

There certainly are no spark plugs or plug wires.

Oil change intervals are same.

Howdy, Bob. If you get a "good one", the diesel can provide inexpensive transportation for somebody doing a lot of driving. When the diesel breaks, it could be far more expensive to repair than the gasser equivalent.

I can compare/contrast my wife's '02 wagon with my 1999 diesel. She gets comparable fuel economy and the fuel shes uses is about 20% less expensive. Neither car has required any signficant repair so we've been "lucky" so far.

Your question doesn't have a single, specific correct response.

cost of owning diesels

When your diesel odometer rolls effortlessly past 300K miles, then 400K and is till running and the you gasser you thought about buying has had a major engine rebuild and it's second valve job or was junked 100K so miles earlier, there is the real value in a diesel. Between my son and I we put 425K miles on a 79 300CD and it never needed any work on the engine, head, transmission or rear end and it had the original exhaust system, interior, etc.

John,

Older MB cars are more durable. The steel gauge is thicker and parts chunkier. Do all diesel exhausts last longer than gassers? If so is it due to different exhaust gases?

Do you use any of these diesel fuel conditioners? Cetane boosters? I wonder if they do anything or if they can actually damage your engine?

I had used a lot of these diesel "performance enhancers" in my old VW TDi but dare not use them on my MB. I must say the only thing that made a difference in silencing the 4 banger was cheap automatic transmission fluid.

I've used RedLine Diesel Fue Catalyst in both the 300SD and 300CD since they were new - makes a big difference - neither car smokes even on heavy acceleration and both have over 200k miles on them.
