Is Fleece the correct oil filter for 06 320 CDI
Is this car supposed to run a fleece oil filter? The dealer says only paper are available....getting ready for my first oil change and I am planning to use a dipstick pump (topside boat oil changer). Stupid question....as I have not looked for the oil filter yet, where is it located??

The filter is under the driver's side plastic shroud and can be seen without its removal. Unlike most car engines the MB passenger car oil filters point 'up' and located inside a metal cannister on the 'top' side of the engine. The filters come without the metal container. They go straight into the metal cannister which is part of the engine.
Why do you plan to suck instead of draining the oil? You get all the iron filings that came off the block if you drain. You can flush the engine before putting new oil in. Sucking will leave stuff inside. MB is doing that to save on time and labor.

I had a 2005 CDI until I traded to my present vehicle. I got Grey hair trying to figure out the correct filter media for the diesel filter. The paper filter is the correct one for your application. And by the way, that same filter is responsible for catching all the "metal shavings from the block";
don't be concerned about using an extractor. Good luck with your car, I plan to purchase another CDI in the future (possibly a "C" class) that motor is sweet!

Mercedes now mandates fleece oil filters for all models using FSS system, which includes any E320CDI.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but if I remember correctly, at the time I did the research on the filter for the Inline 6 CDI, the fleece filter available at that time was sized to fit the V6 engines. The filter for the I6 was slightly larger. Kent, you are in a better position to speak about this than I as you have the car in your driveway-but for my 2005 CDI, the fleece filter was unavailable.

The original filter removed was a paper filter and was replaced by the same. My dealer said that the paper was the only filter specified (he did not know fleece from paper) but said it was the correct PN so it must be correct.
Removed the lower plastic plates and drained the oil from the bottom....took an extra half an hour to R&R. It went on much easier than I thought...I was thinking about cutting a hole in the bottom to access the drain plug but will wait until next oil change.
I tried to re-set the FSS but no luck. Is the CDI different to reset? Does anyone have instructions on how to do this??
Thanks

Thanks for the pics..
It seems that fleece filters are always enclosed in a plastic mesh. It confirms that what I used on my last oil-change was correct. I also read somewhere that they can be cleaned and re-used, although I'm personally not going to do that...
