new guy

hello, i'm new to the forum... i found a mb dealer about an hour away and they have some nice cars in their inventory. one is a 93 300d (104k, $9000) and one is a 87 300sdl (130k for $7700).

are there any differences in the drive trains? is one better then the other?

do these seem like reasonable prices? (or at least decent asking prices prior to the car being inspected?)

what should i look for when inspecting one of these cars? are they any "known" issues that i should pay special attention to?

i like to learn as much as i can about a car before i buy, so my ears are open. i have heard nothing but good things about these cars (except that repairs can be very expensive which kinda scares me)

thanks in advance for the help!

Both of those are very expensive. Always avoid used car dealerships. Look through auto trader, craigslist, the local paper and the many Mercedes forums on the web.

The 300D has a 2.5L 5-cylinder turbodiesel. It is a good engine but it has alot of electronic emissions controls that can be troublesome. The 300SDL has a 3.0L 6-cylinder turbodiesel. Overall a very good car but the cylinder head can crack if the engine is overheated and/or the cooling system is neglected.

Neither should cost more than $6,000 if they are in good condition.

thank you very much. these prices seemed really good compared the the "mb specialist" dealership 5 min from my house but i guess they are still high.

in all my research, i can not find one cheaper then $6000 in less it has 200,000+ miles on it.

any suggestions as far as mb forums or specific classified websites in jersey?

edit: is there one diesel model that is the best as far as reliability?

thanks again,

to get back to the price thing.... i have just done some research, on craigslist and ebaymotors. for the mileage and condition (pictures) the prices i listed on these cars seem average if not low... i was searching in a 100 mile distance from my house just outside AC, nj

i am finding ones a little cheaper but the are the gas motor only..

any feedback?

Both are excellent cars, but completely different. Neither will have issues if well cared for. With that low milage, M1 5w-40 and M1 ATF + Differential fluid will keep them running forever with proper service.

Here in Finland w124 200d is 2.0 8v, vm 85-93 250d is 2.5 10v and 94-96 is 20v om 605 motor. vm 85-93 300d is 3.0ltr 12v motor and 93-96 is 24v.

Untertürkheim,
thanks for the info. i think i prefer the 93 300d because it is 7 years newer. i just wish i had $9000 to go up and check it out with.

would you suggest pay attention to any areas in particular when inspecting one of these cars?

also, another dealer 2 min from my house has an 87 300sdl with 230k on it for $3900....
and a 82 300sd with 240k for $1900
and non-diesel 86 300e with 153k for $4400

what are your thoughts there?

thanks
