e320 smokes under heavy acceleration

Seems an over-fuel situation. Is this normal? Anyone else experience this?

Miles? Is there any hesitation under acceleration? Most diesels will smoke under heavy acceleration, if the car is dying it could be air in the fuel system.

Seems there was a thread recently with the same subject if not the same title. You could search.

Ours did it from brand new and AFAIK it's normal.

The solution is the latest V6 with particulate filters.

The 05 model has a particulate filter so it shouldn't smoke.

Are there any engine codes?

.
Very many reasons can cause smoke.
Check the fault memory.
If there is nothing, MAF sensor.

Mine also smokes if I nail the accelerator hard but only when I haven't accelerated hard recently. It seems that I get some buildup in the exhaust system and then when I nail it hard the particulate breaks loose. Afterwards, even on repeated hard acceleration I can't notice any smoke. All this makes me think I should just save up for that occasional tailgater and then let them have it.

Sorry, no particulate filters on the '05 and '06.

When our '06 E leaves the garage, the place is filled with enough diesel smell to choke you.

You can stick your face in the exhaust of our GL and never smell a hint of diesel. In fact, it smells like a laundromat, i.e. just hot and humid.

Mine does the same...big puff of smoke during heavy throttle tip-in if heavy throttle hasn't been used in a while (for instance, after the wifey has it for a few days).

It has done this since new, but seems to do it more so now (20k miles).

I agree that there is no particulate filter on the 05-06 model years but what is that catalytic converter - muffler looking thing under the engine bay?

yep, that's bout right. Someone suggested fuel additive - anyone have one that's particularly good?

Redline diesel fuel catalyst is the best all year round.

In winter I use a blend of diesel additive made by Canadian Tire, our local Wal Mart.

Tailgater vs CDI smoke

Just read your idea about recycling of CDI smoke. I can wait to try it. Hope you didn't to wet with IKE.

The E320 CDI models do have particulate filters, this is seperate from the Bluetec system, but DPF have been standard for a few years now.

There are very few 2006 E320 CDi cars in Toronto though I have seen one belching lots of rich black smoke on acceleration on the DVP highway and going FAST. I have only experienced this once after putting in too much engine oil, when I was accelerating hard.

As this happened only a couple of times and there were no signs of CEL or any warning lights I assume that all is well with the fuel mixture.

The black smoke from my car is not rich and thick like what you would see at diesel truck drag strips but rather a few intermittant anemic puffs.
