Technically, my SDL uses gallons of oil at a change as well. 8.5 quarts is just over 2 gallons...
Almost all diesels have huge sumps that require double the oil vs. what a gasoline engine does.
Knowing that fact should make Amsoil use even more atractive to all the diesel fans here and everywhere. 8.5 qaurts every 6K or every 25K in the environment. The choice is yours!

I guess it depends on who you ask then.
I kept track of fuel economy over many tanks running regular and "premium" diesels. What I have found is that the premium pays...
In nearly every case, the increase in fuel economy offset the increase cost so that the cost per mile would be the same, but the added benefit of smoother/quieter/more powerful engine is an added bonus, then for free.
Although in Canada it may be different than in Germany.

The soot worries me though with long oil change intervals. Do you remember the advertisement in some diesel truck magazine that says "soot is diesel cancer!" with a woman holding a phallic shaped dipstick?

No, I don't get those magazines. Amsoil doesn't have a 25K filter for my SDL, so that means my Wix filters will be changed out every 12.5K. That should keep the soot down to a minimum.
Having used the product for years even with high mileage engines, I have no real concerns. That does not, however, mean I won't periodically check the oil level or condition.

FWIW - Got my first oil analysis on the E300 with 251k miles.
It went 15,414 miles before FSS tripped the computer. Has usually tripped at the 16K limit imposed by FSS.
After 15k miles M1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5/40 still had TBN at 7.7, insolubles at .3% (they look for <.8% based on a 7k mile interval). Wear metals looked good too.

Anything below 4% is nothing to worry about. Even my antique engine running 8-9000miles on synthetic only produces 2% soot. The newer engines will produce even less.
A huge help is adding an external bypass filter. The filter MB uses on these engine is an embarrassment when it comes to the bypass filter quality, its nothing but cotton gin floor sweepings. Full of bugs, dirt, rocks and sticks and ripe with loose passages for oil to go straight through the media without any filtering. Using a quality filter like Amsoil's EaBP90 works far better plus you can use the clean oil output/drain to spray clean oil directly on the timing chain and it adds an extra quart of oil capacity.

I use Sunoco GOLD and I add a splash of 'Howes meaner cleaner' just for taste
For my Toronto (GTA) members Dixie and 401 is the cheap diesel price area.
Sunoco gold can be had for .07 cents cheaper than anywhere in the city.
check out: torontogasprices.com
You can get B20 in the winter and B50 in the summer @ Toronto truck Terminal @ James snow pkwy and 401.
(I tried it no big wow)
Steady diet of M1 5w40 every 5k no problem. 321,000 km on the OD.
Driving it like you stole it keeps everything nice and clean

This message is hidden because Goatman is on your ignore list.
If you remove or modify the engine cover, you could possibly fit one at the back of the intake manifold. I'm sure there is a place behind the bumper or fender well to mount it too.
