300SD model question
I'll be buying a 300SD sometime later this year. I'm trying to find out which year this model changed and what changes were made.
I know I'm looking for an 80's model but I'm seeing models with the allow wheels of a standard 300D and models with the more flat silver disc like wheels from years 81 to 91.
Can someone in the know save some time and give me the dates of which models?
I'm also interested in the difference in the engines. Like the 300D's the pre '86 models had better engines etc.
Thanks for the help.

"Better" is a matter of opinion.
79-85 has the rock-solid, reliable, simple and proven OM617 but it has low power compared to modern engines.
86-87 has the more modern, efficient and powerful OM603 but it is more fragile and complicated.
90-95 has the 3.5L version of the OM603. Decent torque but has a known common problem with bending connecting rods and extreme oil consumption that doesn't occur in the 3.0L version.
