Don't make the mistake of extrapolating today's diesel characteristics to the 1980s models.

Today's cars are 35 mpg highway, 1980's are 25 mpg highway.

Today's cars are rocketships, 1980's are slugs.

Of course, you are not prejudice.

I have written to "your uncle" as have many others that own Azeras, and we have been ignored completely!
Even when in the Hyundai "Think Tank" discussions, we are simply ignored when we ask about our lousy shocks.
Many are complaining about similar problems with the new flagship, the Genesis.

Many many Azera owners have complained about these lousy shocks and our complaints have fallen on deft ears.

When you go to the dealer, it's "we are only allowed to change the shocks once."
The mechanic that installed my second set told the Service Manager that the TSB installed shocks which he had installed himself were now bad. He even put it in writing, and management came out to him and and tried to cross out his recommendations. The service writer, the service manager and the mechanic all went for a ride in another Azera that was off the used car lot and F/S. The comment was that it did it too, so "that's normal!"
This mechanic (Jim) was fired because of his position. He told me that there had been four
Service managers at that agency during the two years that he had been there!

Finally, after the Service Manager telling me that the latest parts would not fit which I knew not to be true, I threating Lemon-Law, and the Hyundai factory rep authorized these same parts to be used as a 'goodwill' gesture!
I knew they had gone bad within only a few short miles. So that's all three different sets of shocks.
All have different part numbers.
No one makes an after market replacement for these inferior Mando shocks.

Ask your CEO uncle why there are so many used Azeras on used car lots all over the country?
Ask him why their resale value is so low?
People have purchased nice clear low mileages examples for as low as $10.5K.
I do not care what the rating organizations say, let them
come and drive my Azera and see what they say then!

My car beats you to death.
In any good car that has a properly controlled ride, I can and have driven 900miles in a day. Now with this piece of junk, simply driving the 250 miles to Las Vegas and also on the return trip two days later, I feel and so does my wife that we have travel a 1000 miles instead of only 250. It is that bad. The ride simply beats you to death.

My daughters' E-420 that is over eleven years old and has 150K miles still rides like the first day they bought it. Still has the original Bilsteins BTW, and they are the same as when the car was brand new.

Also, another problem:
The dashes in some cars split and I know of several owners who have had their dashes replaced twice.

And another:
O2 sensors fail, and it takes more than one week to get them replaced. When that happens,
several cylinders simply stop firing, and you wonder if you can get off the freeway!

So much for your Hyundais.

Yes, as a matter of fact I do know a few people who do own Azeras.

What we have in common is the many faults that the Azeras have that we all share.
I've talked to them many times by phone and we do exchange information on a regular bases.

As far as me being full of it, that is your opinion and you are stuck with it.
I have paper proof of what I say, and my car is at this time being
litigated under the California Song-Beverly Lemon-Law act.

Now Mr. Wiseguy. What ignorant comment will you make now?

Ouch! Again? Goatman - You need to check the back of your head; you probably already have a bald spot from so many from TMAllison and Green E-300 DT
Maybe you need to rub some of that synthetic AMWAY -oops, I mean Amsoil stuff you sell on that bald spot...

So, you got the 85?

Good luck with it partner. There are some good diesel mechs who hang out here if you need any help. You learn to ignore "slappy" after awhile.

BTW - You as the author can close the thread.

Question Which model?

'85 300 Turbodiesel? 240D with a stick?

Don't pay any attention to comments about either being slugs.

The idea here is to simply drive it and enjoy it being a diesel.
They will get you there and even get you a speeding ticket if you're not careful.

Interesting side note:
On the evening news, the CHP is cracking down on speeders on the widened 118 freeway in Simi Valley.
The news types rode along, and this chippie nailed some poor lady in a Volvo wagen at 87 mph
in a 70 mph posted area, and it was mentioned that her ticket will cost her almost $400.
They also said that for those caught doing 100 mph or more, the fine is $1361.
So I realize that being in that big of a hurry to save a few minutes on a 60 mile trip simply is
not worth an expensive ticket, and I will slow down and drive slightly slower than the posted
70 mile per hour limit and let someone else who blows by me get the greenstamps.
I only hope that I am not rear-ended by someone coming up fast behind
me while I am in the slow lane who misjudges my safe speed.

Good luck with your W-123. We had four of them. All bought new.
One '72 220D with a four speed, the other three were all 240Ds. A '74 automatic (very slow)
a '76 stick, and an '81 stick. None of these were turbos of course, but even the
slowest would get you in trouble if you stayed on the throttle long enough.
Just drive yours sensibly and don't be in too big of a hurry and enjoy your Benz.
They are really nice cars.

Don't see how you can go wrong with your selection.

These have plenty of power because of the Turbo mainly.
If memory serves, these turbo five bangers were first introduced to N A in
the wagon in either 1980 or 1981 followed the next year by the sedan.
Seems to me that the early examples were 110 horsepower,
but by the time yours was built, the HP rating was 123 HP.
Does not matter. It's torque you are really after and not horsepower.

Non-turboed five bangers were really slow. Being like a 'slug' was mentioned.
I used to beat the non-turboed five cylinder 300Ds with my stick-shift 240D.
The automatic trans took more power than the extra (fifth) cylinder provided.

Take reasonable good care of it, run good synthetic oil
and clean fuel, and you will be extremely satisfied.

Looking forward to your pictures.

well it is a slug - until it gets up to 10-15 mph. then it's a virtual rocket ship.

Try revving it up a little (not to much!) against the brakes before you
take off in order to spool the turbo up and see the difference.

The reason it is stronger after it gets moving is because the turbo is
"on the pipe" (boosting at higher psi) as the two-stoke lovers say.

I'd go easy on the trans myself, they were kind of a weak link in the W123's and seem to start developing issues at 150k miles.

Numerous engine and convienience accessories on that car are vacuum acutated; if you have any gliches start looking for and replacing rotten rubber connectors, etc. Its bound to need some maint after 25 years. You'll want a mittyvac if you plan to do much yourself.

G'Man - You've said that twice now.......You obviously are clueless to the fact that most diesel W126's have the 617.951 engine that is a kissing cousin to the 617.952 the W123 has...... Its only the SDL's later in the last two years of the W126 model run that got 603 engines.

Try to keep up, OK?

Just keep the timing chain recent and the vales adjusted. That thing will run for a good long time. I was in the market for one of those untill I drove an S-class. Then I was ruined as far as the W123's went. Too loud, too slow, too much maintenance.
