You indicated that the diesel V-6 was designed in such a way that it cannot be rebuilt. Is the same design true for the gasoline V-8 engines as well? In your professional opinion why is MB doing this now when historically they had never built "throw away" engines?

I am interested because I am thinking of buying a W212 E550.

I don't know. I don't really care for g@s engines so I've never looked into it.

Cost and customers.

More precision parts means a higher cost to make an engine, more surfaces to machine and more parts to stock. They can't remain price competitive if they can't keep costs in check.

This generation wants a new car every few years, not one to keep running for a decade or more. They need variety, entertainment and low cost rather than consistency, reliability and value.

A 300D cost $32,000 in 1982, after inflation thats $70,500. In the USA today, it would be a very tough sell to make people consider a 5/6-cylinder diesel sedan for that much. Now if they offered the E420 CDI over here for $70k, I'd bet they couldn't keep enough in stock.

That's just your opinion. it's an over-arching statement not borne out by the facts....maybe five or ten years ago this would be true bit no in today's world...

You pretend to know it all, hell I can see why Goatman and others have such a problem with your rambling...

Altering quotes is against the TOU but unlike you I won't run to the moderators...

Goatboy is nothing more than a troll that exists to inflame arguments about anything possible so that he can get his jollies off causing disruptions.

Altering quotes is against the TOU but I won't run crying into mommy's arms.
Thats because you know it to be true.

Do you smoke cigarettes?

Eat pretzels?

Do you work for an International truck dealership?

PS...An engine with a liner is an engine designed to fail....so I would re-evaluate your throw away engine remark.

It is obvious that 240D's life stopped between 1980-1982..

I would never insult my skills by working for such a trash company. How did you get hired on there, breathe and have a semi-stable pulse?

Then you best avoid every MB made before 2007 (especially the hundreds of thousands over 20 years old!) and throw away whatever you're driving (too embarrassed to list it?).

Its obvious you're a troll with nothing productive or intelligent to add to the discussion. How about you take another 3 year nap and leave us adults to discuss business.

The Mercedes OM904, OM906, and OM926 diesel engine used in Medium duty trucks all over the world is a parent bore engine....very successful engine since it hit the NAFTA market in 2000....there have been over 350,000 of those engines sold. I have seen first hand those engines go well over 1 million miles. Wet sleeve vs parent bore will always be a hot topic.....

Also it would be a good thing if you referred to urea as Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) since DEF is 67.5% water. Referring to DEF as urea shows your ignorance on that topic.

I am currently driving a 2008 Grand Cherokee CRD with 46,000 miles.

Please get on the ball here, we are discussing car engines, not semis. I've seen even the lowly junk Volvo D12 make a million miles without a rebuild in heavy duty trucks. If a medium-duty D12 can make it hauling 80,000lbs of mass around, its not even slightly interesting that MB can make their engines do it pulling around 26,000lbs.

Only to people with no knowledge on the subject.

What is the remaining 32.5%, thats right, UREA! "DEF" is the name made up by manufacturers because their dim-witted customers think urea=urine.

Seriously, you talk about ignorance when all you've done is demonstrate it yourself!

I do think an engine hitting 1.2 million miles is interesting.....Just because you think urea is urine does not mean the rest of the population does.

Ignorance is as Ignorance does.....

Not when its seen on a daily basis.

Please go to a 1st grade class, learn to read, then go back and read my post again and you'll see how ignorant you look saying that.
