To idle or not to idle

Hello All,

We have an '05 CRD that requests we let the Liberty idle for "1 to 2 minutes" after driving. At first I was extremely diligent with this waiting processes. Now, I base this depending on what my last trip involved. Meaning, a long road trip (towing or not) I let it sit for the full 2 minutes to cool down the turbo. If am doing start and stop trips around town, perhaps 15-20 seconds of wait time. I have heard that any car with a turbo should idle for a "period of time" before turning it off.

I do not own a GL 320 (yet!) but I was curious what owners of MB diesels do for idle time before turning off the engine. Is this even listed in the owners guide?

Thank you,
Josh

Thats an old myth.

Cooling off for a long time is far more important when driving around town. By the time you have decelerated off the highway and stopped, your turbo has cooled. In the city you're accelerating and getting it hot much more frequently and have a very short time before stopping for it to cool.

In any case, its a waste of time with synthetic oil and/or a water cooled turbo.

I always let my turbo drain back into the oil pan before shutting off. Its not a pressurized system once the engine is off, so let it idle a minute or so before shutting it down.

I had a couple of Ford 6.9 and 7.3 with ATS turbos. My truck had a utility bed and weighed about 13,000 lbs. My EGT with normal driving was 600 F on the highway. I noticed that after coming down our driveway, and letting it idle for 15-20 sec. temp was 250-300, unless I was pulling a trailer, in which I would let it idle for 5 minuts or so.Th highest EGT I ever saw was 1200, pulling a heavy trailer. Since the Fords, I bought a 1 ton Dodge, put the same bed on it, and I would use the same idle practices on it. So far it has 230,000 miles, and haven't had any problems. I now have an 05 E320 CDI and 07 ML 320 CDI, and anticipate no problems with them either. I always allow 10-20 seconds to allow the turbo to slow down, and the last minute or so is almost always at a low power throttle.
