Turbo boost

I posted elsewhere about a turbo tied off but no response. I have moved on to enabling the turbo system and installing a boost gauge to see whats going on with it. My search netted 3 different answers to the following question.

How much boost should I see from this bone stock 87 3.0 SDL turbo? I would love to know before I take it for a spin. its totally stock.

How much boost can I SAFELY feed it and still expect it to have a long and trouble free life. I drive pretty sane but I live on top of a really nasty hill that eats underpowered cars and craps hot oily peices. I would like to do what I can without pushing the envelope to much.

Thanks for any information in this.

1: 10psi stock.
2: 12psi is all that can be used. More boost will not increase power.

Exactly what I was looking for, thank you sir! I'll go take her for a spin and see what its doing with the turbo enabled.

I really didnt want to allow it to overboost and thats why I was waiting for this information.

Again, thank you.

I'm almost there. I removed the wire someone had placed to hold the wastegate open and the actuator arm came off after it. It appears that a circlip should be there to hold it all together at the turbo.

The dashpot holds over 20 lbs of vacuum but does not move the actuating rod that goes between the dashpot and the turbo, nor can I move that rod manually to to make it reach that small lever on the turbo.

How do I test the factory Dashopt/actuator assembly?

Can I replace that system with an aftermarket dashpot/wastegate if defective, thus enabling me to tailor the boost and bypass all the factory ALDA equipment and still prevent overboost condition?

Any wisdom or links for repairing/replacing/troubleshooting turbo and wastegate issues would be greatly appriciated until my service book arrives.

A search actually revealed very little information on this, please throw me a bone, Im a very long ways from anyone that knows jack about benz anything.

Thank you!

Tony

Thats because it uses air pressure from the turbo.

I found it much easier to assemble after carefuly introducing PSI to the dashpot, its assembled now and some vac lines that needed replacement are taken care of. Going for testdrive now with boost gauge.

Houston, we have boost, ~12lbs

Its at least safe to drive on public roadway now, I know its not up to full power yet, the turbo takes it's sweet time spooling and its still extremely soft off the line. Going to set pump timing, check timing chain and maybe adjust the ALDA to stiffen up the fuel available off idle.

Thanks for the information, these forums are quite helpful.
