300SD stalls, won't go over 40 mph

New module replaced last month when car stopped running altogether. Glow plug light wasn't lighting up. The car still didn't run right after repair, bogging down at 40, but the light came on and went off. Now it doesn't come on altogether. Glow plugs were worn, replaced & didn't solve the problem. Car is now stalling after driving a few miles, just before stall the speed drops down to 15-20.

Need help ASAP, mechanic can't look at it for another couple of days. It took a week just to get the module installed.

Go to dieselgiant.com and follow the GP testing proceedure for the W123 to solve the GP light.

The stalling is probably restricted fuel flow or a leak. R&R both filters and check the manual primer pump for leaks. If wet, replace. Could be a clogged tank screen also.

How cold is it where you are?

Same on fuel filters and tank strainer. When were the valves last adjusted?

Replaced all fuel filters, ran fine for a few minutes, then stalled coming out out of a stop. Checked under hood and manual primer is wet. Doesn't help priming it again & tightening, still won't start.

When cold, the car fires up right away. After it stalls, I can't start it again for several hours. I've taken this car to two German car specialists who adjusted the IP despite telling them I've never adjusted valves. First visit was 2 years ago, then a different shop one year ago. No one has ever diagnosed it as needing valve adjustment. I have no idea when it's been done, the last owner didn't know. Another shop 8 months ago gave up on it, was smoking excessively (and still is).

And now another shop. The module was definitely bad, but no reason was given for why some of the terminals "melted". Car is in So Cal, not getting below 40 at night.

Valves must be adjusted every 12k miles or every year. Performance and economy suffers greatly if its neglected.

When I first bought this car, I found the dieselgiant website and replaced the valve cover gasket, but the clearances were ok. I'll ask the current shop i'm using to look into it. They've worked on a few other MBZ diesels in town. Now the only problem is getting the manual primer pump...they use napa and they couldn't find the part.

I'm not exactly a newbie with these cars, but I prefer someone else doing the work when possible. I used to have an account on this board, but couldn't access it.

A valve adjustment on your engine is required maint......

The new style primer pump is much better than the old design and its pretty easy to R&R. WorldPac should have it.

All vehicles should do this, i mean stall when it gets to the speed limit, i dont see the point in cars going any faster when all it does is cause accidents and fatalities.

Sorry, you fail to grasp the concept of freedom. If you want everyone to be forced to follow the law to the letter by big brother, you should build a time machine and travel to 1943 Germany.
