No More ESP 5w40
It appears that MB has changed the oil spec and discontinued the use of Mobil1 ESP 5w40. What they are putting in now is MB branded 5w30. I am unable to find out from anyone why the change. The MB branded bottle does not even specify ESP, it just has a green cap. I went to Napa, they were out of it as well, and no longer shows in the Mobil book. I ended up purchasing the Mobil 1 ESP 5w30. Not sure I like the lighter weight. I did pass a stack of LubiMoly 5w40 that lists meeting the 229.51 spec. Any thoughts.

I happened to get 4 each six packs (24 units) of the Mobil One 5w40 ESP M MB 229.51 5w40. I was able to get an app $24. discount. I will used that for topping any to all of the diesels I now have. The M1 ESP 5w30 is ALSO MB 229.51 compliant VW 504/507 specification also.
But really the MB 229.52, 0w30 ESP X1 is THE latest "go to" product. . Right now there is VERY little chatter as to comparisons of the three. So, even as it is logical to expect better mpg with "lower viscosities", ala, 0w30, 5w30, 5w40, and better performance parameters, the jury is still out.
But then on the other hand, I am getting 49.9 mpg to 35 mpg. with factory filled 5w40 (12,100 miles) and dealer oil and filter change with M1 ESP M 5w40 MB spa 229.51 oils. What that will be switching to M1 ESP X1 0w30 remains to be seen.

Amsoil
I drive an 05 E320 CDI so I am pretty sure I don't have a DPF and I believe the op is driving CDI's not bluetec so the Amsoil would still be a good choice.

I think this Amsoil is good for the bluetec's http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produc...?code=AFLQT-EA

Looks like the 0w-30 is available most places now what do we think about using it in the om642?

I see MB only references 229.51 so I guess w30 oils are acceptable.
Diesels don't run that hot, so there is probably little difference in actual use.

I've always used Lubro-Molly...no scientific reason I just like it.
Samaritrey - my Mom has a 52 MG kit car on a VW bug chassis when I was in High School, mid-eighties. It had an engine fire, we got a new motor and had a guy re-wire it. 4 years later it caught on fire again...it was still cool.

Where do you buy your oil from? I haven't ever seen it on the east coast only online.
Yeah I love the MG its a 1954 TF 1500 that my grandfather restored. Sadly It is leaking fuel onto the exhaust and I don't have the time to fix it. I hope to get that fixed and get the headlight switch replaced this summer so i can have some fun.
