Problems/Issues after Emissions Recall Performed?
During regen, you cannot breathe near the car.Its always been like that.
The only tolerable smell while parked is once its at full temp.
Im not sure if its worse after AEM but it definitely stinks when its cold.
My solution is to get in and drive. No idle...Then no smell..

perhaps the smell is subjective. Alot have lost their sense of smell last few years..😀
These diesel smell topics are all over the internet.
A friend has a 2015 VW diesel and during regeneration you cannot stand behind the car.
My car doesn’t burn any oil, no CEL, so I have no reason to believe that there is anything wrong. When fully warmed up, its extremely faint (if you’re behind an idling car, almost not noticable)
Since you’re in Toronto, I can stiff your exhaust sometime to compare.😆
As a starting point, do you know when a regen is occurring? Have you been outside of a running car during regen?

The VWs do stink because they completely lack any exhaust after-treatment system (I'm sure you're familiar with "dieselgate") and you're absolutely right that they reek.
It is usually easy to tell when a regen cycle is happening - but the only smell even during a regen cycle is that of "extreme heat" (as in metal parts being so hot that you can smell whatever road debris may have accumulated on the underside of the DPF burning off). No unburnt or incompletely burnt diesel comes out of the tailpipe. All of my gasoline powered cars smell more than the ML BT. Yes, I've been outside when it is happening - as I said, the heat is very noticeable, but there is no diesel smell.

Dont park a truck doing regen at idle by a hedge though, will make a big brown spot where the exhaust comes out. Dont ask lol

Yeah, the exhaust gas temperature during a DPF regen cycle is about 570 deg C / 1050 F. That will definitely burn bushes, melt plastic and set fire to whatever happens to be near the exhaust. Been there and done that.

The 2012 Jetta did not have DEF.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG

The DPF was still working normally as ya cant do anything about that.
The fuel mileage went down after the recall so must be better lol.
I had a code for fuel pressure sensor, that wasn't on the list of parts changed, but it's common to bang the turbo charger on it when removing it and damage the sensor.
But I didn't want to deal with the dealer again or argue that they damaged it, so I ordered a sensor from amazon for $45 next day delivery and fixed it myself. So far so good. Haven't driven it enough to tell if anything else is effected but the CEL didn't come back.

Each of 4 AEMs I had done require some fixing.
Form sensors only finger-tight, to wires run against sharp edges of heat shields to shipping stickers still left on DPF, what is fire hazard.
"The agency had found that Volkswagen had intentionally programmed turbocharged direct injection (TDI) diesel engines to activate their emissions controls only during laboratory emissions testing, which caused the vehicles' NOx output to meet US standards during regulatory testing. However, the vehicles emitted up to 40 times more NOx in real-world driving.[27] Volkswagen deployed this software in about 11 million cars worldwide, including 500,000 in the United States, in model years 2009 through 2015.[28][29][30][31]"
Sorry for the thread hijack everyone... back to regular programming.

Anyhow back to regular programming....
The fact that it doesn't do this when warm has me scratching my head and you'll need to wait for the more tech savvy members to jump in.

Ive noticed two change points after doing AEM.
1. my engine idle is different when cold, same when warmed up
2. More power at low end
All in all very positive improvement
