To me, it sound like bad high pressure fuel pump on front of motor, or the control valve mounted to it.

What's the mileage on the engine?
Even the engines are 1 milion miles rated, their fuel pumps are not.
I had failure of HP pump on I4 Bluetec at 260,000 miles on Sprinter. I took the pump apart and when the failure happen due to broken spring, the pump shows wear and I recall earlier test showing lower pressure as well.
Get Autel dongle, who will give you nice troubleshooting page for the system.

Yeah, consider what it is doing: taking a low viscosity liquid and pumping it up as high as 2000 bar (about 30,000 psi).

The pump is build to pump high pressure, when it uses diesel fuel for lubrication.
We do have experienced diesel shop owner on Sprinter forum and he says the HP pump wear out happens when fuel is contaminated with water or gasoline.
My Sprinter had 2 commercial owners before I bought it and used as a shuttle locally, so I have hard time to believe such owner would do those mistakes.
Still 260k miles before pump failure on Sprinter took the amount of fuel that SUV or sedan would use on 600k miles. Can't really complain much.
