Turbo shaft play OM642 opinion

What a PITA day servicing my GL350.

engine air filters
both sets of cabin air filters
fuel filter (engineer should be shot on this one)
oil & filter
transfer case fluid

Turbo shaft is starting to get a little play in it. Compressor side isn’t hitting the housing however there is a little up & down play and a tad of in & out play. What do y’all think about that?

Can’t get the video to upload…..

Years ago I rebuild turbo on OM642 as I was replacing the block and it was convenient to do at 180k miles.
Rebuild kit was about $40 so not a big deal in whole job
Still after putting new bushing and new end plate the turbo had some play. I did not have micrometer to check the exact measurements, but it look to me that some play is normal thing.
Get micrometer and WIS if you really want to get to the bottom of the issue

Are the bushings pressed in or do they "float" between the housing and the turbo shaft? Floating bushings have much more play.

Was doing that like 5 years ago, so don't remember the details, but there was nothing to press.
Point is that at 180k miles the turbo was stil good and the rebuild kit did not change much.

Sounds like floating bearings. There is a layer of oil between the housing and the bushing and another between the bushing and the shaft, so, double the clearance.

Thank you for easing my mind about it. Im running 5k mile oil changed, plus there is no oil consumption to speak of in those 5k miles. Went about 6k on this oil change & added nothing in between. I’m using a provent 200 and catching about 16oz. in 5k miles which leads me to believe it’s not burning much if any.
