OM651 Oil Cooler Check Valve O Ring (HELP)

I am getting ready to change the water pump and housing and I thought while I'm in that far I would replace the O Ring on the Oil Cooler Check Valve assembly. It is not leaking now, but from what I've read it will leak at some point. I went to the dealer and parts checked with a mechanic and he said I would need to replace the cooler that the O ring is not available. I find this very strange. If anyone has just changed the O Ring behind the black cover please chime in. The pic shows the cover in question. I have watched on YouTube and they have just changed the O Ring. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Paul

Have a link for the utube video? I dont have wiz but looking at various parts suppliers in US I did not see any part or part number for that o-ring. It all came as a unit with exception of the oil cooler itself which came with several o-rings however none that I saw looked like that. The individual oil cooler could also have been after market.

In US that whole assembly is $130-150 give or take. As far as these cars go I think thats half way decent for a setup like that. Considering half of its plastic and the cooler could potentially lose efficiency eventually just replace it eventually. Or do a RTV o-ring, or .....

Is there something special about this o-ring that prevents using an off the shelf replacement?

I had reached out to the shop that did the video and he finally replied. MB does not have the O Ring. Sold as a complete unit. NUTS! He said he used a ring for Higher temps and petroleum-resistant. I will check with my local Napa store. Thanks for the replies and I hope this little bit of info helps someone.

I had similar issue on OM642 engine with oil filter housing.
The seal is having crosscut of oring, but it is not circle-shaped, but quite zigzags.
Took me some time to find part number for the seal, but then it was easy find on ebay.
When MB USA will force you to buy whole part to get the seal, in Europe you can buy seals alone just fine.

Napa is usually ok but there are various places that may help more if you run into a dead end. Where ya located at? In my area we have Tacoma screw which is a great place for various fasteners and O-rings. Fastenal and granger also have a great supply of stuff like that.

Keep us updated if ya find something. I could definitely use the info.

If you can find one made from Viton you can't go wrong.

Sure ya have it figured out by now but was perusing utube and saw this video. Had the same thing leak on his vehicle.

Its just a typical round Oring so no special shape or anything just gotta get right size and parameters. About time 1:50 shows it.

If it's not leaking I wouldn't touch it. Many problems come from MIF (Maintenance Induced Failure)
