Anyone using a K&N air filter?
hi guys,
i have a e550 coupe and was wondering if anyone has installed the K&N air filters for this car. i had them in my CLK500 and they improved performance and gas mileage. i also tried them out in a GL450 with horrendous results. The response was improved, but the gas mileage went down by 2MPG. and before you comment, no i wasnt stepping on it. i measured it on a long distance trip. so just checking to see if folk are using these and what the results are. thanks in advance for reading and responding.

I am using 2 of them in the e350. After a 5000 mile trip I scored incredibly high gas mileage and have been getting great mileage since. I posted an article on the changing of them as I believe the e550 uses a similar dual air cleaner set up to the e350. I think they are well worth the effort and money.

i have K&Ns on my w203 and my w204 and i swear by them. improved gas mileage, improved performance, and i have K&N cones on my w204 with heat shields and the sound from the engine bay is NICE. its a nice purr and then a growl when you step on it. even if you dont go with cones, and just go for the K&N drop ins, still 10000000% worth every single penny. every car i own and will ever own will get K&N drop in filters.

Yes, the paper OEM filters should always stop more debris from getting into engine.
Furthermore, while it may be a myth, I've heard just too many concerns about the oiled filters. It's not worth the 1 or 2 HP IMHO.
Instead, I just change the OEM filters on a more regular basis than recommend, to not have the bugs and debris that collect, obstructing the airflow.

I agree with 911.
on my E60 BMW 5 series, the pick up was faster using a K+N panel,
and power was up maybe 2%, sounded throatier but
the car was more thirsty (i had a sport exhaust set-up) and the oil was black.
of course these K+N sports filters have bigger holes and more debris, and i threw it away when it was dirty and bought another one, because the oil that they use (re-oiling) messes up the mas (mass air sensor) which=rough idle, so the million mile thing is a gimmick
in the end i changed the oem every season and saved some hassle as oil and oil filter changes are expensive!!!
with the Drum type K+N, the power and sound is up even more, and if u
can handle changing engine oil and filter often it is well worth it!
One guy with a Gruppe M carbon induction kit - it sounded awesome, like a turbine and vacuum cleaner on full blast!!

ive had mine on for 6month and had the ecu tunned aswell. adding the filters gained 5hp and the sound from the engine is just beautiful.
yes i find oil gets darker faster but oh well. besides i push it to the limit every time i drive it so k&n or not oil will get dark
but i recommend it just for the sounddddd

Is it possible that you could provide us with a sound byte?

Ive had my E550 coupe for abour 2 months now, got the k & n filters in yesterday and they sound amazing, also removed the resonator and rear cats and replaced them with a custom x-pipe and tuned the engine, i think I get 50-60 more hp so worth it

I paid 600 for the k & n intakes and the tune program, and 500 for the x-pipe and installation. Sounds very aggressive and untamed getting used to it and liking it more as i drive it

I raced most of my life both cars and motorcycles and the only way to tell is to dyno before and after a modification. The other way is to buy something that was specifically designed and dyno'd by a reputable tuner for your model car and engine. On my BMW 535i I did the Dinan stage II ECU mapping and they put in a oiled air filter and they saw no improvement. If you decreased the exhaust back pressure then the oiled air filter helped.
