Debadging
Hey guys,
I was talking to a friend of mine and I think it would look hot to debadge the E coupe I have. I have the E350 coupe and I think it will look awsome. I am not debadging it so other people dont know what it is but more or less on the looks aspect of it. Please let me know what you guys think!!
Thanks

I assume you mean with the 350 badge?
Most every time I see a debadged car I think it's a lesser model trying to be covered up so to speak

You have very American views on debadging (conspicuous consumption) versus Europe where debadging of high-end models is rampant and model designation deletion is a popular factory option.

1) I live in America, not Europe...they also like puke green and plaid interiors in Europe
2) If you had an AMG car and debadged it, that would be a little different, as you're not trying to cover something up lesser by removing things...
3) I also prefer leaving my cars exactly the way it was delivered to me when new.

I don't believe that Veblen was referring to the way a car is badged when he developed the theory of conspicuous consumption.
I just find it amusing to see that you believe that removing the "350"or "550" makes any difference -- in the big picture we are all driving a Mercedes-Benz we are all conspicuous consumers

RJC,
How many times does someone have to say they don't debadge the car to try and make it look like a different model for you to understand the concept behind this? Some of us just think it looks a lot cleaner and nicer without the badging. I don't care what the car is or what the model is I personally think a car looks 100 times nicer debadged. Nobody is trying to "cover anything up" so get over it already.

Funny, how those driving 600's, AMG's etc rarely debadge, while those in lesser models do...
ripping cars/motorcycles, etc. I've removed dealer license frames and badges
as well.... simply because I didn't like gratuitous advertisements or unneces-
sary protrusions to wax around. it had nothing to do with trying to keep
model centric people guessing whether my vehicle was a higher end model
or not. simply a cleaner look to me, the vehicle owner.

I was simply making reference to RJCs comment in that while his views may be somewhat relevant for North America, Europeans have a different take on the subject. If I really cared to deciper what model of vehicle someone is driving (MB or otherwise), I wouldn't rely solely on badging.

The fact of the matter is simple. There is no way to generalize debadging. This topic could be argued until the end of time because there are reasons to back either side.
-some debadge for aesthetics
-some debadge because they want to fool others
-some for other reasons
-some for a combo of reasons
Unless someone has the data there is no reason to believe that any one of the above reasons is any more correct than the other, all we know is that they are all possibilities.
So really, who cares. If the thing that makes someone feel best in life is pulling up next to someone with a lesser model and rubbing their face in it...they need to reassess their life.

i've debadged nearly every vehicle i've owned, be it economy car, pavement

I'll agree about waxing around the badging and the license plate frames; I have a simple clear plastic cover over my plates...

YYZ, I knew what you were going for...I was trying to make light of the topic. We are all fortunate to drive a MB.

With regard to your last thought:
That's pretty sad if someone would feel that way or just as sad if not more they think they're being thought less of by society and debadged to cover up that "lesser model"...
