2011 E350 Coupe - Rattle from Rear Shelf
Ever since I bought my 2011 E350 Coupe in December 2010 there's been an annoying rattle from the rear shelf (deck). When I raise the rear electric sunshade the rattle stops.
Mercedes Benz of Beverly Hills worked on the car and claimed that they "identified" the problem. They re-fitted the rear seat, but the rattle continued.
I took the car back to the dealership and now they say they need to replace a latch on the rear left seat that is causing this rattle - but they cannot explain why the rattle goes away when I raise the electric sunshade.
I'll be collecting my car later today and will be curious to see if they did in fact eliminate this annoying rattle.
Has anyone else experienced rattles in their E350 Coupe?

Hmm. I've had the same problem LA. When the car (deck, trunk, etc..) rattles, is the music on? Some of us have reported the back sub woofer creating rattles with different results or solutions.

MB techs have a CD that they play that cycles through every .LFE to try and flush out a rattle. Once they identify the origin, they often put in felt spacers around the rear deck or trunk areas creating noise. Sometimes it's road noise creating vibration, other times it's the rear speakers. They did this to my car and it sorta worked and was able to see the tech do this personally. I rock my system (it's wonderful) and still get the odd rattle or two every so often. Nothing big, but I will ask them to address this at my next service interval. I'd ask them to try the above and go from there. It takes 5 mins. Heck, call 'em and have 'em do it BEFORE you pick up the car.

I have the same issue.
Took into the dealer a month ago, they kept it overnight for some reason and were unable to hear the rattle .
Well, I will be calling them today to schedule an appt and will have the tech sit in my car to show them that I'm not crazy.

2010 E350 4Matic
I had exactly the same problem with my E350 4matic. One of the many reasons I sold it. In my mind it is the shade itself. Some becomes loose when the shade is retracted. Good luck getting them to replace it (it must be expensive and a lot of them must have the same problem so replacing it may not work). I wasn't able to get them to replace mine. They would dick around with felt here and there to try to appease me but at the end of the day they weren't serious about fixing it.

I had the same issue on my 2014 E350 coupe and the tech found the culprit was the housing/cover on the rear speaker so they ordered me a new speaker. But like many others, the rattle was only audible on certain frequencies and could be heard at low volumes while other songs sounded perfectly.

can someone please post the rear shelf disassembly procedure? i will look into mine to see what is causing this and post the solution. this is not rocket science. i just dont want to break all the clips back there not knowing the proper procedure and make more rattles.
thanks anyone who can post this.

The rear speaker cover is easily removed. You might buy the plastic interior removal tools from Harbor Freight. No more that $10.
Be careful prying up the panel. Several clips around the perimeter hold it in place. Start at one end, pry up that section, and while the tool is still under the panel, slide it down to the next clip and pop that one up. Keep sliding until all clips are free. Easy procedure. Just be careful.
Also, the panel spans the width of the rear window and it is fragile.

I appreciate that but what about the procedure for removing the rear shelf/deck rather than the long speaker grill. im thinking to batten the hatch back there, i need to remove the shelf and do it right (isolate and secure everything back there so nothing can possibly vibrate)

I would not advise taking apart the rear shelf. Especially if you have the rear shade. It's quite a job and you may end up with more rattles in addition to the original one.
Remove the speaker cover and with the heel of your hand, hit the shelf in different places in an attempt to narrow down the source. Once you find it, you can add foam rubber to that spot.
The source of most rattles has either been the shade or the speaker cover.
The easiest access is thru the trunk. Hope you are a contortionist.
