2012 Model
Not to beat a dead horse, but how will the 2012 e550 coupe fair against the 2011 e550 with respect to the following:
1. Torque
2. Grunt/Engine Sound
I read in another thread that the engine sounds weird/muted.
FYI - I plan on putting on an Eisenmann exhaust.
Thanks!

For MY '12 the E550c is 402 HP and 443 lb. ft. torque. This improves over MY '11 which is 382 HP and 391 lb-ft.
As to how the US version of the '12 E550c will drive and sound I doubt that anyone in the US knows yet but maybe there is some European experience out there with a Euro version.

Thanks I did search but did not see my questions answered on point. In fact, I saw a lot of discussion demonstrating displeasure at the new engine? Which makes me wonder...why if there is gonig to be more HP AND more torque??? Somenoe also said the engine was more muted?

Go back to that thread and look at post #31 where I wrote a brief review of the new engine; this answers most of your questions about engine sound etc. More power and torque are direct results these days of DFI technology and when turbos are also added rises in these can go up considerably even with less displacement. It is also normal when turbos are used for exhaust sound to be muted somewhat this is due to the exhaust gasses used to turn the turbo.

So What did you decide RJC? Will you wait for the 2012 or will you take advantage of the better pricing on the 2011? If the difference in torque and sound is negligible, I think I may go with the 2011...though, it would be nice to get a better trim (i.e. black ash or carbon fiber trim).

The black ash wood is available on the 11's. The torque is much more in the TT DFI motor. The real pricing power on the 11's will be seen when the 12's are on the dealer lots. I'm leaning toward the 12 for the better resale, fuel economy, power, trans etc etc. But the 11's NA V8 is still sweet. if I were buying a 6/350 it would be a 12 hands down no contest. I do not like the over pronounced turbo hiss I experienced in the new TT DFI CL550 I drove, I hope this is rectified for the 12's; MBUSA are you listening???

Can you source any youtube videos that has this hiss? Not sure what you mean by this or what it sounds like.

Just go drive a new CL550 and you can hear it for yourself like I did; also have the sales person do a moderately aggressive drive by with you standing there and you'll hear the turbos unnecessarily loud hiss which is more befitting of some kid's aftermarket turbo kit on a civic. Hope this is corrected for the 12's.

Since I'll be waiting for the 2012 E coupe to arrive (along with the new CLS), I also added the Audi A7 to my "list". Went by the dealership to test drive and saw a beautiful white A7 with 20's. Thought the handling and traction was better than the E and had power that was close to the E as well.

Demos for the CLS are out??
I test drove a CLS550 yesterday and I didn't hear the Turbos. I heard the engine but not the "turbo hiss" you speak of. However the 2012 CLS550 has a throatier exhaust than the E-class (and possibly the CL550) so maybe I just couldn't hear the hiss over the exhaust rumble.
