EXCEPT
you have to pull "slowly and carefully" the black plastic piece out (using a small screw driver and insert into the little slots) under the chrome strip (under the MB trunk emblem) in order to remove the whole unit of the OEM license lamp and re-install the LED license lamp unit.
Once you pull down the liner of inside the trunk, put your hand in and squeeze the legs to loosen the license lamp.
You don't have to take off the trunk liner.

Hi please confirm that I will not snap the black plastic housing and cause damage if i continue to wedge with a screw driver. The sides have loosed but the centre part around the door handle remains very stiff. I cannot see any screws on the inside but am worried that I may cause damage.

OR
Option 2: just remove and replace the existing halogen bulbs with those CANBUS T10 wedge led bulbs. You can still keep the original license plate light housings without doing the extra steps.
