What does the sport button do?

"sport" button does not lower car at all.
Instead, it puts transmission into a "sport" mode which means as it says - earlier downshifts, later upshifts and car starts (when standing still) in the first gear instead of second when in "comfort". "Sport" - for more performance, "comfort" - for better fuel economy.

Use of "M" mode allows the engine to achieve maximum revs (almost redline): then it shifts automatically. Below redline, you must use the paddles to shift.

Yes I stand corrected. My 2010 E550 also has the same exact set up as well - the so called "dynamic handling" suspension. I just doubt that any lowering takes place since MB does not explicitly indicate so.
The "official" info states "a sport-tuned Dynamic Handling suspension lets you alter the damping rates, accelerator response and shift points with the touch of a button".
My initial comment above was appropriate for E350's sport (or S/C) button, not OP's E550.

my car goes into sport automatically after driving 200 mts or so, after it came back from the dealership for a spark plug repair! lol
the car does drive stiff for sure, and I am a pretty relaxed driver, so getting used to sport mode is taking me sometime and now Ive just lost confidence in the car for some reason. Am i being paranoid, or is going to sport mode gonna be a big issue?
