Resonator delete....ALL 550C OWNERS NEED TO DO THIS (PICS) (SOUND) (GTIH)
Just had this done, 45 minutes and $200 (yes expensive but I knew the guy does good work). The car sounds phenomenal, this is how it should have sounded from the factory.
The removal of the resonator makes the engine 100% more throaty, it's not deeper but much throttier and it burbles real nicely.
My dealer recommended I do the resonator delete, I was originally looking at a muffler delete but they advised against it.
I will post a sound clip later tonight.

Thank you for doing the experimentation that I would have done. Much nicer to know ahead of time that it will be a good change, rather than one I might have had to spend $$ again to undo! That stainless tubing isn't cheap, and with the welding not a bad price for the work. Looking forward to the sound clip. Although I like a more quiet car these days, the stock sound is so quiet it's hard to tell from sound when to shift. Are the cats clamped into the system, or welded and would have to be cut out?

I should mention, the car is only louder at slower speeds. On the highway there is ZERO difference, no drone that I can hear and no real difference. It's only once you slow down/accelerate that you hear the difference.

Attached is a sound clip. Use headphones. It was taken with a crappy camera phone which doesn't capture the deepness but you get the idea

If someone knows a better way to upload let me know

I'm not sure, I didn't remove the cats, only resonator. But I believe everything is welded in, the resonator had to be cut out.

I'm on a Mac at the moment, but I have a laptop PC that I can download the sound file to later. My state doesn't do a smog check, not yet anyway, and if RENNtech thinks there may be some increase in power available from removing the cats when adding their ECU upgrade, I might do that as well.

File is an mp3, should be able to play in itunes on mac (i'm also on mac). I wanted to leave cats on for warranty purposes but if you're doing the ECU upgrade then yeah, I would defo remove cats. the standard ECU can't really make use of the improved breathing, but I suspect the RennTech upgrade will.

No, the site recognized I'm on a Mac and wouldn't let me download. I hadn't considered any warranty concerns with the cat removal....... I don't think it would impact any other systems on the car and if it doesn't I don't see why Mercedes would care? But, I do need to talk to my dealer to see how they look on mods.

OMG. you spent 200$ on it and did not do an X-pipe??? you could get much better sound with it....
straight pipes are just the gipsy way to do it.
PS done Y-pipe to mine E200cgi, the sound is completely changed..

X pipes were too quiet for me. And this isn't a 4 cylinder, the straight pipes work just fine, they're not 'gipsy'

The E550 Coupe does not sound like a tractor with straight pipes. Did you even listen to the sound clip? Maybe the little 4 cylinder in the E200 will with straight pipes, but the V8 is just fine.

No offence, but x-pipes don't "ususally" work well on a V-8 engine with turbo's or blowers. I agree with you that an x-pipe on a 4 or 6 might create a better sound.
But the M278 & M157 twin-turbo V-8 sound awesome with straight pipes.

Here you go:

Interestingly, the car has become much deaper and throatier, it's almost like the pipes have opened up a little after time. I had a friend who owns a 12 CLS63 AMG tell me that my car sounded better than his

The noise will be great, I'm probably going to have the mufflers replaced at some point too.

I asked my local MB-Dealer. The AMG CLS63 mufflers (resonator included) cost about 2000€. But the question is, do they fit to the CLS500 exhaust-system? I think the pipeprofil might be bigger. Any ideas/comments??

I've had a bunch of AMG guys sit in my car and all have commented how it sounds better than their cars with just a resonator delete. I think the resonator delete combined with the turbos makes for a very smooth sound.
Not sure where you're located, but more than happy to meet up if you want to hear the thing in person.

Don't waste your money man, do the resonator delete and I think you will be MORE than satisfied with the sound. If you want more, replace the mufflers with some high flow univeral ones.
