Fold down rear seats "design fault"

Just making conversation here, but:

I find it very weird that the widest part of the fold down seats is behind
the driver.

this way it's impossible to carry something long & wide.
(got stuck at Ikea several times because of it LOL)

Would have been logical to have the wide part on the passenger side...?

I don't understand your problem.

If what you are carrying is long enough to have to protrude into the forward seating area then it would seem to make no difference since the drivers and passenger seats are about the same width, a least in my 2012 E550.

Actually having the wide side on the drivers side in the rear seats should allow a little more angularity in placing the load if it protrudes into the passenger side of the front seats.

I guess I forgot to mention that it's a problem when you're NOT alone
(which is often the case when going to ikea.. )

if you could load the long & wide piece on the passenger side, then you'd still have space for somebody, behind the driver.

Wait, the rear seats fold down? I carried a rug from ikea on my roof because I didn't think they folded down.

On my 2012 E550 coupe I think it was standard equipment. The only interior option I remember getting was package 2 and the softer leather seats.

Wide part IS on passanger side. You just live in the wrong country where the steering wheel is on the left, here in Australia the wide part of back seat is on left, but this is not behind driver. MB obviously do not change this depending on whether car is left or right hand drive.
