Transmission Fluid Location?

Hi everyone,

I am looking to have the transmission fluid changed on my next MB service. However, I am skeptical about dealers actually changing the fluid. Is there a way I can verify that the fluid was actually changed?

I understand that the transmission fluid can only be accessed from the underside of the car, correct?

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Richard

When they change the fluid they also change the filter, so you could ask to see the filter?? To be honest if a MB dealer says they have changed the fluid then you should not doubt them!!!! It is a very easy job!!!!

Thanks Raven - I understand I should 'trust' them, but sadly my prior experiences have taught me otherwise (at different dealers).

Just got the quote from the dealer for a 50K service 'B' and transmission fluid change. Approx $850! The fluid change was over $400, which surprised me.

Hi ! When they change the fluid they also change the filter when the transmission pan is dropped and a couple of smaller components. What you cannot get away with is the cost of the fluid, which is very expensive per ltre.
I would not consider using alternatives which would be cheaper, but that has to be your choice. Labour cost is typical Mercedes prices????
You will probably only change the fluid once or twice in the ownership window and for peace of mind I would keep it Mercedes original.
Owning a top end brand comes with top end running costs, you could go to an independent who will do it cheaper but one thing I would insist on is that they use original Mercedes fluid and not an alternative.......
I had a BMW 6 series before this car and the transmission fluid was the dollar equivalent of $46 per ltre here in the UK, and I know from friends in the States that pricing is not dissimilar, so I would think Mercedes was not far off the mark......

hi Raven,

Agreed - I've no problem with MB doing the work - I'm not sure I would be comfortable taking it to a third-party anyway. Just surprised at the cost of a 'fluid change'. thanks for the explanation - that helped!

You could consider doing it yourself, not a difficult job to do, if that is your forte, the Mercedes is easier to do than the BMW 6 series, especially as Mercedes have an overfill capability to ensure you do it correctly. Just a thought!!

You can buy the WIS /ESRA/ EPC on the net ie Ebay.
Unfortunately Mercedes have been quite clever (or not) with how they manage access to their technical data, unlike BMW which came on a single disc which could be loaded onto a PC without recourse to any other software, whereas Mercedes require the use of Java, so when you buy the software make sure the person who is selling it has the knowledge to load it onto your PC. You also need to ensure you watch the revision changes on JAVA as the Mercedes software is updated with each revision of JAVA.
You can as a private individual have online access to the parts catalogue for a period of twelve months at no cost, just register.
The reason I say all of this is that I have the WIS but it does not allow cutting and paste.
