Gutted E550 M278 mufflers

Honestly, it was just to see how different the acoustics would sound as some vehicles with gutted mufflers give a more throaty sound. Not the case with the E550. The money and work was of no concern, so I didn't mind paying to have it done as an experiment. Each modification done gave a unique sound, which was I wanted to do to help others, and give them more options.

I replaced the resonators with an X pipe, then straight pipe back. The shop did some bends to clear the brace, so any skilled shop should be able to do what you’re asking.

So just had my 200 Cell high flow cats installed and they cut the old down pipes down to almost the flange and rewelded pipe on for $120 per bank. Not bad. Might eventually clean it up with stainless once I decide on what I want. Definitely more drone, but not bad with the windows up. Loss of low end, but may put an x-pipe in later this week to balance out the exhaust gases.
Great write up and super helpful ! By any chance do you remember the diameter of magnaflow 200 cell cats? 2.5" or 3"?

When you did a cat delete did you have a tune? I have a 2014 E550 and I wanna gut the cats but don’t know if it will cause the car to run funny or throw a check engine light??
