2012 E550 with oil filled harness
Car has 135K kms with CEL of the last 8 or so. Ran an ODB and came up with the generic cylinder misfire on bank 2.
Took her into my very good mechanic He ran his diags and there were a few errors so he smoked the car and found an evap leak on the turbo intake of bank 2 and he changed plugs (they were dirty).
All seemed good went out for a spin - nice and powerfull (car was recently tuned by Kleemann) then cel comes back on - ground out fault on O2 sensor.
He decides to check the 02 sensors and pulls the connector and gets drenched in oil..... same for the other side... checks various connectors up to the ECU and there's oil everywhere including t he ECU.. seems one of the cam sensors has likely sprung a leak and filled the harness. Now i'm wishing i bought the extended warranty....
We re going to change the O2 sensors and drain the harness - locate and replace the or all cam sensors and see if will be ok..
Question to the senior members here - should i ditch the car? Up until today its been the best car i ever owned (including the AMG) but this is worrisome to say the least..
thx

Before going any further have MB dealer check VMI to see if your VIN is included in attached Service Campaign 2012070002. Documents 2005-2011 however if vehicle is an early build it may be included. If included and adapter harnesses have yet to be installed you’re entitle to no cost repair that may include consequential damage.

If you can afford the repair, fix it and sell it later. By ditching it as is, there is no value in it. After all it's a 2012 car, after you fix it, you can sell it at a decent price compare junking it. My 0.02.

Hopefully the ecu is ok. You were probably getting the misfire because of the oil seeping into the ecu causing some malfunction. The camshaft adjuster solenoids are not expensive and pretty easy to replace, cleaning the harness is not easy and you might not get all the oil that was wicked up into the wiring so after the repair I would check the ecu every now and then and clean any excess oil that might of not been removed.

My mechanic also saw this bulletin and the cam solenoids are identical to the 2011 cars and harness... but the bulletin doesn't include the M278 engine... so as you say because its one of the first 2012s will they cover it? he has a Benz rep checking now. thx for the catch!

Sorry for mislead, yes you’re right in my rush missed included engines. I did notice camshaft adjusters were replaced twice indicating modification, see attachment. See if MB rep can pull anything related to camshaft failure for the original part #s.

do you know if this was after a certain time period i.e. later in the 2012 production timing? My Mec says the solenoids are identical to the original 2009s-2011s - meaning the bad ones. From a legal stand point Benz would have no legs if that is the case.
