E53 Snow Tires

If the car is ordered with the 20" wheels and summer tires, is there any need for there to be a different offset for the front vs backs. I'm hoping no so they can be rotated. Delivery of my E53 Cabriolet is targeted for early December and I'm in Canada, I want to make sure I have the correct configuration on standby.

I'm quite sure that all Mercedes 20"rims have staggered configuration (font 8, rear 9 inch width). That makes front to rear rotating impossible. You can still do side to side (definitely not the same thing). They also need different profile on 4matic vehicles.

The Mercedes offering are 245/40R19's on 2 different 19" rims, so I'm guessing there is some offset requirement but they aren't very clear.

Snow Tires

This is from the MBUSA.com site. I hope it helps. This site has NOT been updated to 2019 yet.

I have looked at a few tire web sites and can't find the the MO Pilot Alipin 5s or the MOE Sottozero 3s.
(MO = Mercedes OEM approved/custom part, MOE = Mercedes OEM Extended mobility [run flat] custom part.)
I expect this could change in the near future.

The staggered set is also listed for the 2018 E43 Sedan.
I expect to use the staggered set on my E53 when they release it from Baltimore.
*** Warning *** I was wrong. These DO NOT FIT the E53.
These wheels have too much offset and interfere with the suspension arms.

The rumor is that the standard 4Matic starts at a 50:50 torque split, but the E43/E53 AMG 4Matic+ is rear biased.
This could cause faster rear tire wear.
Because the tires are unidirectional, the assembly is corner specific and cannot be rotate.

T

The following should also work, but they are not listed for the E43.
They are also unidirectional, but could be rotated front to rear.
I expect that the could be tail happy with the E43/E53 4Matic+

Guess what? You are right and I was wrong. The Snow tire package wheels have a different offset and don't fit the E53.

Just buy 4 pieces 245 or 255/35/20 winter tyres. Both will suit 8" and 9" wheels, and use same wheels.......

Thanks for the conformation. I actually went into the dealership and looked at their kit. Although the documentation had different part numbers for the front and back (but the same size), the actual kit had 4 wheels with the same part number. I think that confirms your findings.

Anyone in the US figure out if there is a set of Winter Tires for the E53? Won’t be long. I’ve looked and can’t find a set of 4 that would match the tires on there now. I can find front or rear but not the same tire that fits both. If someone has found a wheel/winter tire set that works, love to hear about it. Thanks

Some answers & here is what I have now.

This applies to the E53 ONLY!

First:
Get a set of staggered 19" wheels for your E53. The wheels for the other Es will probably NOT fit.
You will also need the pressure / temperature senders and center caps.

Option 1 Runflats: (This is what I have and what I think Mercedes wants.)
Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3 Run Flat marked MOE (Mercedes Oem Extended run)
Front 245-40R19, Rear 275-35R19, V speed, XL Xtra Load.

Option 2: Conventional snow tires and...
Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 (PA5?) may be marked MO (Mercedes Oem)
Front 245-40R19, Rear 275-35R19, V speed, XL Xtra Load.
An air compressor, hose, and can of fix a flat. (These fit in an indentation under the trunk floor.)

The tires are now readily available from Mercedes parts, Tire Rack and other tire stores.
The wheels, air compressor, and fix a flat are available from Mercedes parts.

The Pirelli run flats steering feel is only fair (rubbery), but you can drive to a Mercede dealer after you stick a piece of steel through the sidewall.
I would expect the Michelins to have better performance and steering feel.
I have only used the air compressor to fill my sisters exercise ball.

Hope this helps.

That was exactly what I was looking for. Thinking I’ll get the conventional tires. I only need to use the run flats on my previous Mercedes and it was great. Just like you said. Had the wheel and tire too, so no cost either.

Thanks!
