83 240D to 73 220D Engine Swap

I have a 1973 220D with a good 4-speed manual transmission and a poor engine. I am thinking of purchasing a 1983 240D with an automatic transmission and good engine, with the intent of doing an engine swap. I would like to keep the manual transmission and swap the engine only.

Does this sound like something that will be a simple swap? Any warnings or tips that anyone would be willing to share?

THANK YOU!

Post your message again in the Diesel Section so "240 DT" can read this and advise you. You can PM him too. He has a car similar to your planned conversion.

It will not be a simple swap. The oil filter housing will interfere with the steering box. An adapter plate can be custom made to relocate the oil filter, and the transmission can be swapped. However, it's all very time consuming and requires some fabrication skills.
