Long time reader, first time poster.

Hello,

I come across these forums whenever i'm looking for a problem related to one of my cars and today I come here unfortunately looking for a diagnosis to one of my problems.

I was driving my beautiful, just purchased last week, 1983 Mercedes 300 Turbo Diesel, coming down a hill yesterday when this woman blew through a stop sign, causing me to slam on my brakes to avoid hitting her. As I did, I heard a clunk or grind of some kind. When I started driving away my steering wheel jerked to the left HARD so i had to hold it to the right a lot just to have it straight. When I got out of the car, I noticed my driver's side front wheel was sticking out a little bit more than the passenger's side front tire. I also hear a squeal when I drive the car, especially while turning it.

I'm wondering what this could be, and is it going to hurt the car and make the problem worse if I continue driving the car for the rest of the week?

Thank you.

Probably a broken ball joint or suspension bushing.

It can hurt the car, its also very unsafe for you and everyone on the road to drive a car with a major suspension problem.

Thank you!

I'm gonna take it to get looked at when I get out of work, i'll let it be known what the problem is. I'm kinda thinking (i'm no mechanic) that my caliper got crooked and if I just put it back on right everything will be ok, but we will see.

Well I brought it to two shops, and found out it is the sway bar, completely broken off on the left side.

While driving it last night, the seat started going through the floorboard. I think i'm gonna get some sheet metal, rivet it in and put roofing tar around it to seal it or something.

Also, the vacuum pump is shot. I got myself a winner here hahaha...

It's gonna cost between $900-$2200 to fix for the sway bar alone, depending on how smoothly the repair goes... Oh boy...

Sounds like you've got a parts car. I'd dump the money pit asap and spend that $900-2200 on a car in much better condition.

240 - Isn't there a retrofit kit to replace the rusted off ends of the sway bar on W123's and W126's?

I'm gonna dump the money into this for now... The car shifts fine, and I can fix the floorboard. Thank you for your replies!
