Why did MB patent the grooved design of the tail-lights?

I see no point of the grooved design..
Is it due to aerodynamics of some sort? I doubt it is, given the design of the W124 hehe..

from what I remember actually the w124 has a pretty good drag coefficient.... better than most cars.

I think I remember reading it was around 30...

Really? I'm suprised to hear that. Just by looking at the car you could easily think less of its aero dynamics.

i've always heard this design will also keep them cleaner.

the air rushing past/accross them keeps them cleaner/more visible

MB made a big deal about the grooved design. The recesses stay cleaner and more visible when the assembly is splashed with mud or whatever.

sounds good..., and i would think it would break less easier as opposed to flat lights

lol Try doing 120 in your car and see if you can hear any exterior noise.

you guys are kidding or what, that is very basic knowledge for mercedes lover, the grooved pattern was designed to prevent snow staying on the tail light and blocking the light indication! just that easy!

yep the whole idea was improved visibility.

here's something interesting.

"Detailed wind tunnel work did much to reduce interior noise levels, while simultaneously reducing air resistance to 0.31Cd. The new chassis represented 27% aerodynamic improvement over the W123 Chassis."

"The under carriage was also analyzed in the wind tunnel. The floor pan and other components were designed flat and smooth. this included a protective belly pan under the engine, aerodynamic covers for the lover suspension components, and a panel covering the electric fuel pump assembly. even the shape of the exhaust was optimized for drag."

- The E-Class Owners Bible

So clearly just because it's a heavy luxury sedan, doesn't mean that Mercedes cut corners on performance.. IMO one of the greatest cars ever built.
