Wiring Harness Woes

My wiring harness and voltage regulator has failed in my 94 E320 @ 57k. The dealer has quoted me $2100 for replacement. Does that sound right? Also...I read a while back on the forum about some type of hidden warranty replacing the part up to 150k miles. Does anyone have any information on that? Any advice would be MUCH appreciated!

the wiring harness was on a nationwide recall. they are obligated to replace the harness under that RECALL. if they refuse tell them u will report them to the bureau of automotive repair.

Thank you so much for the input, Eric. Hopefully I will have success with Mercedes Benz Chandler in resolving this issue...

Since the harness (upper one) is under $500 and only takes a monkey to replace...not sure why they would gouge you for $2100.

Definitely go with the recall route and try a different dealer....or DIY...its easy to install....lay the new one next the the one plugged in and go crazy. Took me only about 1.5 hours on my 500E.

Which wiring harness needs replacing? The only manufacturer's recall was for the wiring in the driver's footwell. If it's the engine wiring harness, you're on your own. Some people had their engine wiring harness replaced under dealer "goodwill", which was typically reserved for their good customers. Even then, it was usually a compromise where they gave the labor for free but you had to pay for the part.

I haven't heard of anybody in the past two years post of having their engine wiring harness replaced under dealer goodwill policy. These cars are now too old for MB dealers to concern themselves with this problem.

Kestas,

Are you aware of any recall on your 95 E320 Cabrio? Thanks.

No, there is no recall relating to the engine wiring harness. I had to pay that out of my pocket. The only recalls on my car are the following:

Recall No. Date issued Title

95-0223 MAR 95 Recall - Wiring Harness Chafing/Shorting

95V031000 FEB 95 Recall 95V031000: Wire Harness Protecter Installation

CMP95_0131 JAN 95 Campaign - EGR Valve Replacement

77_011A APR 95 Campaign - Replacing Soft Top Bow Actuating Levers

I'm not sure if they've been done.

I just went through this and checked all the recalls. The wiring recall is for wiring under the driver's carpet. The wiring that fails is the main engine harness. MB want about $950 for the harness. You can get a Mercedes harness from Rusty at buymbparts.com (I think that is the correct address) for about $725 free shipping and no sales tax. It takes at most 2-3 hours to install the harness. I would avoid the dealer who wants $2100 as they have changed so many harness I doubt it takes more than 1 hour for them to change it so they are pocketing an easy extra $1,000 of your money.

You should also check the small three wire harness that goes to the oil pressure sender, oil level sender and starter. This harness is near the drivers wiper arm. These wires are not included in the harness and are not available. The wire end can be bought and it only took me 1/2 hour to make the harness

There are several sites that have links for recalls and service bulletens. You can just enter your car make in goggle and recall or service bulletens. The NHTS also has a safety recall list.

You can do a goggle search for your car make and include recalls and service bullitens. There are several sites, some free some charge. You can also check the NHTS government site for a list of safety recalls.
