i smell gas....
uh oh. ok recently i just filled up my gas tank ( not to the brim where it won't allow me to, but near it, just $20) then like the next day.. i started to smell gas. especially in the cabin and most significantly in the trunk. the smell only is omitted when the car is on. the car is not being pushed to its limits. and today it smelled horrible ( im talking about gasoline just in case i didn't state it ) looks like i have a leak somewhere. today i got out the car after doing a quick t.p at a friends house :v ( also included some forks all over their lawn, mustard drawings of some male characteristics, and bologna all over their front porch. :v ) anyways, i got back home and the smell was unbearable. after i got out ; i went around to give it a quick check and i heard i faint hiss coming from the rear tires, i hear it from both sides. the hiss continued for about a 1 minute and a half ish... should i take my car to jerry at import auto works and see what he has to say?

You probably have a leak in the fuel system somewhere in the rear of your car. The fuel system is pressurized. When you turn the ignition on, your fuel pumps pressurize the line to a certain psi. When you turn the car off, the line stays pressurized for a while. The "hiss" is probably the pressure leaking off after you turn off the ignition. The fuel pumps/filter and accumulator are all in a compartment under the car, near the rear differential. They are covered by a plastic shield panel that you remove to access the parts. You may want to take off your aircleaner box and check the fuel lines and fuel distibutor near the enigne to make sure they are not leaking. I would not think that a leak at the back of the car would smell that noticable inside the car. That's Karma for you.

Odd thing was my check engine light did not go on. The smell went away after the O2 sensor was changed.

O2 sensor is not going to cause a hiss coming from the rear of the car. Check fuel lines first. If it's leaking gas from the rear or from the fuel distributor that could cause a serious fire. You won't look so cool trying to drive around in a Benz that looks like a burnt s'more.

Do the simple stuff first. Check your gas cap. If the seal is in doubt, replace it. It sounds very similar to what happened on my wifes car. It took a day to air it out...

How should I be looking for for the gas cap seal? I can't really tell whether it's OK or need to be replaced, as all the rubber and stuff are all there. And why did you say that it took a day to air it out? Did you mean that you have to remove the cap and wait for a day then put the cap back on?? Why do you have to "air it out?" Many thanks!
