I bought one at REI that was made by Yakima. It was using the universal crossbars and then uses specific clamps for the w124, however I wasn't all that impressed with it as the rubber pads that they use leave a residue on the paint, this was before my car was repainted so I wouldn't do it now for sure, i returned the system the next day. I have a gutter rail attaching roof rack for my w108, so I didn't really need two racks on two cars anyway.

my 124 has mounting areas underneath the black chromed rails. just use your thumb to make the little tilt thing tilt up and find the stock racks that can be purchased for the 124.

I went with a hitch by Draw-Tite
I am not sure which W124s had then and which W124s didn't have them, but my 1995 W124 sedan does not have the OEM mounts for a roof rack. I thought it may have been for the coupes only, but as I said, I really have no idea which W124s had the mounts. I hated the idea of having the rubber cups and clamps, so I decided to get a receiver hitch to carry my bicycles. It is better in my opinion, since there is no road noise, the bikes can't damage my car, and I just install the rack with one bolt in a matter of seconds. It is a stealth bike rack.

For our 300E we have both factory and Thule racks, and neither makes use of the roof metal strips for mounting. There are no "mounts" that come with the car or mounts manufactured into the car.
Rather, the mount--which is part of the rack--has a pad that just rests on the roof and this assembly is clamped to the roof via a bracket that fits into the door cavity. You can see the marks for positioning the mount clamps stamped into the door opening sheet metal. No reason why these aren't the same on all W124 sedans.
Clearly, this isn't the way it works with T-wagons, as the roof rails are there. Thule for one makes brackets to clamp to the rails so Thule bars can be used. The wagen can be said to be the only W124 that "comes with rack mounts."

Man, I think that roof rack is one sick idea to put on something like that on a car like that.... unless?! it's a wagon !!!! ....there should be no one even thinking about doing so.

If my memory is serving me right now, I think I remember seeing threaded holes for mounting the OEM roof rack. As I said above, I couldn't imagine using an aftermarket roofrack on my E320, so I went with the hitch. The bolt on OEM version might have been cool.

Thanks.
Only exist, apparently, on coupes.
Sedans and wagons are W124s, too.

thx for the compliments. the rims will be on show again at the oct 15th meet. i just went to brabus today and tried to get different center caps but alas no luck.
also i added a new mod for those people that think they cant have a sub in the trunk and enjoy it inside the car without haviing to loose their trunk to a box.

The original post was about sedans.
Clearly, information about coupes is irrelevant, and--as I stated--misleading.

I still think the hitch is the way to go, although I did have to rig some spacers to clear the rear skirt, since the hitch seems to be designed for an older W124. It also required drilling four holes into the trunk. That may be an issue for someone that is concerned about damaging his or her car.
