Where do you live?

My gas station was at $2.63 a gallon but it's slowly dropping down. It's at $2.59 now.

Been using it in Bigblue since the first day I got it! Been over a year now and I have not seen or felt anything negitive! Sure I will be blasted for this but it works in my V8! With the computers and the knock sensors if theres a ping or knock she will get dialed back! And yes I know the little sign says premium!

92 300E doesn't have "computers and knock sensors" to adjust timing to accomodate low-octane fuel.

The car says use premium unleaded. It probably means something.

M103 and premium

I kinda doubt a two valve head with 9:1 compression really needs premium (even though it says so).

aggressive spark plug timing could require premiuim.

anyway, i use regular. i sometimes get an off idle stumble and use fuel injector cleaner.

i dont the stumble so much when i use premium. but i think it depends on the gas really.

Red face

It's a matter of timing, and the standard timing asks for premium!!! If you want to switch to regular 89 or 91 you need to change the resistors which are controlling the timing of ignition. It is the so called EZL thingy which has like 3 positions to adjust for lower fuel octane numbers. You can turn the standard positon to "N" which shall work for 91. My guess you loose little performance and may end up with a lower MPG, which obviously eats up the advantage of the better price of regular.

Hi, i use regular gas (86 octans) in my 230E and i dont have any problem. When i have a long trip that force my car, i use a mix of 40% regular and 60%super and it works perfectly. Maybe you can try an octane booster, you can find it in any gas station.
Best regards

My guess it's a timng issue! Use reg and puter dials back the timing so a little loss in milage! Turn up octane and you turn up the timing! a little gain in milage! But then again I might just be full of crap!!! But sounds good to me!!!

Did the 92 have a computer that could adjust the timing on the fly? For some reason I did not think that was available until around 96 or so or when they went to the 430 on the V8.

On a 'glad I live in the South' note. I drove into my favorite station today and they were bumping the tanks up .25 per gallon as I turned into the station. I did not make it in time to get premium at 2.14. When I went to pay the owner gave me the pre-raise price since she saw me coming in as they were changing. Nice savings on 26 gallons.

That's a good question Bear! Not sure when MB went to elec ign? I do know my 95 has it for sure and a 92 Audi 100 I dismantled had a computer ign. Usually the knock sensors will dial back the timing! I saw reg fuel down in Greenville SC for $1.95 !! Damn never thought I would think that a bargin!

i wish we could get petrol this cheap over here , my car costs me the equivalent of about $87.00 dollars to fill and this happens on average twice a week .its about time somebody put a stop to our rip off prices

sorry about the rant but maybe this will make you feel better about having to use that s/unleaded knowing that it could be worse

My wife and I took an 1800 mile drive from Milton Keynes through Scotland and back to MK in a W210 a couple of years ago and I just handed the gas attendant my credit card and signed it, never looking at the cost. I figured that would just ruin the trip for me. That was an absolutely wonderful drive. It was the first time we had not just taken the train between London and Edinburgh.

What I can't figure out is that on Wednesday, Premium was 2.15 all over town (has been for two weeks). On Thursday it jumped to 2.39 for no Fn reason. Today it dropped back down to 2.29.

I have a minor in Economics and I cannot figure out a single damned thing that is jerking prices around like they have been. In the past month there have not been any interruptions in flow, even threats. Futures have fallen at a steady rate and there is not supply/demand issue that should jack the price. They even dropped the requirement for MBTE or MTBE or METB or whatever which should drop the price about .08. I have a headache now, I will quit.

hey i got my car from milton keynes,

1800 miles that must have definitely been the scenic route, i'd say if you have the time and don't mind the cost this is the way to go, i hate using the motorways

Do you have "unleaded plus" available? For the last seven years I use that 90% of the time, and the other 10% I use regular gas. I filled up the tank with premium couple of times, it did not make any difference.

No, regular here is 87, and the "plus" is 89. Again, I did not feel any differece between the 91 and the 89.

Maybe, but I put almost 100k miles in the last 7 years on this car, using non-premium fuel. I checked the accelleration with both "89" and "91", it was the same. Also when the car had 100K miles (it has 130k now) I replaced the head gasket (typical MBZ oil leak), and the head, as well as the pistons, were virgin clean, without that black crusty crap. Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to convince the world not to use the premium gas, I am just sharing my experience.
