well I was going to suggest using a heavier oil but it seems you have already done that...are you sure you haven't sprung a leak?

If you're positive you're not burning any oil then its definitely an oil leak. Look at your timing chain cover and you should notice some oil residue on there. Its not uncommon for vehicles our age to leak like that. If it's also showing signs of leaking on the oil pan you might want to change the gasket. I'm told that if you change your timing chain cover seal that it will remedy the problem but will return eventually. I'm not 100% on that info but it may want to be something you consider. Just change the oil pan gasket and go w/ a thicker synthetic oil (0W-40, 15w-50, or 5w-50). I wouldn't go as far as 20w-50 unless you live in extremely warm areas, plus 20w-50 isn't the best winter oil if you live on the east coast.

From what I hear and owning the same motor in a 92' 190E previously with 150K on it...that sort of oil consumption is normal, unfortunately.

You probably just need new valve stem seals. If the seals have never been changed they most like need to be. After they are changed you will be amazed at how little oil your car uses.

Mercedes benz 1991 300ce(RIP), now an 89 300ce
i had the same problem in my 300ce, also burning a quart a week. i went to pep boys and picked up some oil additive that supposedly sealed any leaks within 1000 miles. im not sure if it sealed all the leaks or of the brand, but it seemed to work really well. i havent had to add oil in almost 2 months.

Oil....

Sounds like normal consumption at that age/mileage....leaky seals, burning oil, par for the course from what I hear....Mine is about a quart every 1000 miles or so....

I agree with Ron, valve stem oil seals is where I'd start.
Are any of the plugs fouled with oil?

I don't like the idea of oil additives. Fix it properly.

when did it begin using oil?

The history of the car. Important to make any valid judgement. What is the history of oil change intervals? If it has had negleted oil changes it will simply be worn out, new motor is the fix for that. If you have had regular oil services a mercedes motor should not be worn out and using oil. It is going somewhere else than out the exhaust pipe. What do the spark plugs look like? When was the head gasket replaced? Is there oil in the coolant? Like other listers posted: check the gaskets.

Dave,

When I purchased my 90 300CE back in November, it to had some oil leaks and used a quart about every 1000 or so miles.

During my last two oil changes, I have added a can of "Restore" to the oil. It is a product I have used on higher mileage cars for the last 15 years.

As a result of using this product, I have no leaks anymore and use less than a quart of oil in 5000 miles.

Works for me, so give it a try. It takes about 500 miles of driving for the product to do what it claims.

Good Luck,

jayare

Red face thanks

first let me say thanks for all the responses.

I spoke to an Ex Mercedes mechanic and this was his scoop on the situation. He informed me that back in the early 90's Mercedes decided to modify the valve stem seals since the 89 -90s were showing signs of burning oil with the engines having less then 25,000 miles on them. So they re-engineered a new seal and they all should be replaced. So thanks Ron and everyone else.. He told me the book was 6 hours and with parts I was looking at around $500. He mentioned I should run 20w50 for a few oil changes to see if consumption was less then a quart a week and if I could live with it and if not he would gladly take care of it...
I hope this helps anyone else with the same problem .
He didnt have the orig part number but he did say if you try to order the orig you would get the new and improved version...
Dave
