Question Thirst for Oil, what's normal consumption?

My cars are burning about a quart every two tank fulls, what normal?

I changed the valve seat seals on one of my previous 300Es to remedy this because it had over 250k miles. My current 300E has a rebuilt engine with ~50k and my wifes car has 115k.

I doubt your car is burning oil, MBs are notorious for leaking however. You may not see evidence of it, buts its happening. All you can really do is replace the problem areas, valve, oil pan, timing chain cover seal(s) but its only time until it starts leaking again.

Maybe worth trying is a product by the name of "Restore". You can get it at most any parts store/Walmart etc.

I have had it in my 300CE for the last two oil changes and it works. I was using about a quart every 3 tank full's. Over last weekend, I made a run from my home in Florida to my home in N. Carolina and back. During the 1584 miles, I added not one drop of oil and ran at speeds between 80 - 90+. During my return trip of 732 miles, I averaged 66.54 mph, so I was running along at a good clip. The current oil now has 4M miles on it and the car has 113K. My "weepy" oil area's also went away.

So, for the cost of entry (about $6 or $7 bucks) you can't go wrong.. It takes the product about 500 miles to work it's magic. I started using this about 15 years ago and have always found it to perform as stated.

Good Luck,

Jayare

I suspect you are burning oil and you need new valve stem seals. I have two 92 124s, a 300E and a 300TE. I did valve stem seals on the sedan at about 100K miles and I recently did them on the wagon at about 134K miles. The wagon was using about 1 quart every 275 miles. Now it uses almost no oil. I’ve not put enough miles on it to get a more precise figure but I think it’s now using about 1 quart every 2,500 to 3,000 miles. I think Mercedes says 1 quart every 1000 to 1500 miles is within normal limits.

Here a link to a DIY for valve stem seals.

Restore

Mercedes has never reccomended any additives. However, and I am one to follow there recomendations, I'll sidestep them in this case. I've used Restore and I agree w/ previous posters...it does work. A mechanic who originally reccomended the product said to be sure and drive for a minimum of 30 minutes AFTER the engine was at operating temperture.
