Anyone know what those thingies are that reside above the back rear window on some Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9 cars? I have attached an image that shows them. They are nub/fin like things, I would probably call them diffusers.

Can they be purchased after-market? Are they affixed with adhesive? Thanks guys!

Here's a better shot of the Evo Lumps as they will be called for now. Can anyone tell me what they are called and where I can buy them aftermarket?

Edit: its called a Vortex Generator, and came stock on the Evo MR.

woot, the first of many modifications! Hopefully this one actually works (unlike the wheels). I'd install it now, but they JUST dropped it off and its a pouring rainstorm outside. Guess that means I'm not a true enthusiast -_-

I briefly eye-balled it, it's pretty close but not perfect. It will never match 100% because it's not constructed in the same manner as the tail lights and will always reflect light different. It's close enough that it probably won't bother me. I'll find out tomorrow when I install it If it turns out I hate it, I can always paint it body color or sell it.

Has anyone installed this filler panel before? I seem to be having a spot of difficulty. I have removed the emblem, license plate, and black license plate bracket (installs behind the license plate & holder), cleaned everything up, and placed the filler panel in place. Now, the problem is that the black license plate bracket wont fit in place over the filler panel, and the 4 stand-offs that the bracket screws into are wider than the holes that are drilled into the US plates and frames. So, I can't mount my plate. WTF.

Help

Sure, in a minute. It was raining pretty hard here earlier so I had to come back inside.
Do you still have the red filler panel available? I may be interested in purchasing it.

Edit:

Okay, here are the pictures. Each one explains what is going on.

question is, do you like it? ~~~ i'd tape the license plate on where it should be and then decide

you can trim the license plate bracket till it lines up with the holes, the original doesn't have that top edge

I like it fine. I'd probably prefer to go with all red tails and the all red filler panel, but yeah.

If I trim the plate bracket, I'll lose two out of the four holes to screw the license plate into. Is this how this has to be done, or is there another bracket I should have ordered?

I appreciate you doing this here...I bought one on ebay and it is likely to go on my brother's 89 coupe. I've got no bracket either, so looking forward to your solution.

I like it:

looking at your pix ~~~ one could elongate, or hog out, the bracket's 4 mounting holes ~~~ but you really need those bracket back bumps to fit in the indentation of the mounting holes for a good fit, recommend trimming the bracket

if trimming the bracket, doesn't look like you'll get into the plate holes

get back to ya on your email

Yeah, I'll have a go at trimming the top of the bracket and see if I can get enough off to have it sit properly. If not, who knows what I'll do.

Did you send an email Teezer, because I've gotten nothing.

No problem RHW, I'll be taking some photos and doing a brief write-up once I get to chopping that bisch. I just have to figure out what tools in my dad's library will do the job properly.

Progress gentlemen, progress. I've gotten it [license plate bracket] to mostly fit flush within the tail light filler panel, now to trim two more parts. After that, I will have to figure out how to secure the license plate frame/license plate, but that should be fairly trivial. Pictures/write-up to follow soon, I'm busy tonight watching my younger cousins.

Again, more explanations on the pictures.

Basic Write-up:

1) Remove license plate and frame, and bracket.

2) Clean area thoroughly.

3) Modify license plate bracket to specs shown below following pictures/directions.

4) Mount filler panel.

5) Mount license plate bracket on top of filler panel.

6) Screw bottom of license plate/frame into license plate bracket. Longer top screws will be needed with possible addition of plastic sheaf to prevent torque from pressing/bending license plate/frame when screwed tightly.

i like it too ~~~ i'd keep your tails, the amber on the end keeps the clear look in check along with the license plate

did you use a spacer on the top mount of the bracket ?? ~~~ seems it tilts forward a bit from the lower mount ??

chip on the bottom under the plate? ~~~ how'd you do that ?

This is from years ago...don't remember having to modify the bracket or anything else...straight bolt on.
Possibly I turned the bracket upside down ?

I had the reflector painted signal red and I may install it when I get around to finishing my ducktail...

Thanks Teezer, I'll keep it for a while I'm sure.

No, no spacer yet. I will put one soon because I don't like the idea of the plate flexing any more. It's out like that because the top of the filler panel is about a half inch thick and the plate/frame press up against it more so it's raised out of the way.

I broke the bottom of the panel by screwing in the license plate to mount it. I screwed at a wrong angle and put pressure on the panel and not into the bracket.

You must have gotten lucky with either the bracket or the filler panel itself. I've tried every manifestation and orientation known. I've written a veritable Karma Sutra of filler panel installation in the last few days, and how I've done it is the only way I can figure. I'm very excited to see how it looks when you install it!

Thanks denim! I think it'd look nice on your car, especially if you can find a panel to match your tails, or smoke it to match.

I now have installed a red Soei 36mm festoon bulb in the rear dome light housing. I'm working on replacing the front dome light with my other red Soei bulb but it's proving to be a ***** to get that unit out of the ceiling.
