Mercedes benz 1991 300ce(RIP), now an 89 300ce
sup guys...out of curiosity how much hp can one gain from a port and polish and throwing in titanium or aluminum pistons. also, can a port and polish be done diy? i wanna see if i can do some easy work on the benzo this summer. im assuming pistons cant really be changed diy, thats more just for my own knowledge. thanks

I don't know exactly how many hp you could expect from p&p on a mercedes head, but you get the most gains from that with an engine that is not very precisely finished, such as older hondas or vw's, but even then that's one of those mods that you save for after doing the intake, exhaust, cams, etc.
You may get more gains from lighter pistons, probably better throttle response, too.
If you really want to dump some cash into your car, do this:
1. K&N or other high flow air filter
2. 2 1/2" exhaust with free flowing muffler
3. Performance cams
4. Resurface the head to increase compression
5. Stroker kit
6. Port & polish
7. New pistons
8. Engine balanced
9. Lighten the flywheel

Now, I haven't researched these mods as far as the m103 or m104 engine is concerned, so some may not exist and some may not increase hp enough to be worthwhile. this would be good stuff for you to research to determine which you should do.

oh - P&P can be done DIY, but it takes some skill to get it perfect and assloads of time.

i was told by my mechanic that port and polish would not yield much gains in the m103 engine in 0-60 time
it is caused by the engine structure which has thick pistons and long piston bars ( i dont know what it's called, sorry)
they caused long travel in making compression and thus slower in pulling the car away
i just cant tech talk...... i'm sorry

thats why i feel that lighter pistons would dramatically increase the 0-60s

How much would lighter pistons cost, and where would you get them from?

What you basically want to do is rebuild your engine.
Unless you have experience in doing so, it's not an easy DIY.

You just don't put pistons in the hole that they came out of.
To max performance and durability the block needs to be pulled out and sent to a machine shop.
You probably have cylinder wall wear, so the block should be overbored by about five thousandths and then cross hatch honed.
While out you would probably want to line bore the main bearing caps.
Your crankshaft should be magnafluxed and balanced.

With the head off you should cc the combustion chambers and port and polish the casting. You'll need a valve job and should do new lifters and springs.

Stock cam is fine, if you are not doing any additonal intake or exhaust work.
Performance cams are not easy to find for the M103/M104's.

By the time you are done you'll end up with a blueprinted engine and a cost of well over $5K

You'll have to look at the fuel injection and replace any components that are not working to spec.

Better off buying a V-8 W124, unless there is something special about your vehicle

I hate my computer....I have a cable modem but my 56k was just as fast.I keep getting a pop up saying my virtual memory is too low....Maybe one of you computer geeks can tell me what to do to make it faster...

Bjay, you need some more RAM, or you can increse virtual memory by right clicking on my computer, properties, Advanced ->Performance->settings->advanced->Virtual Memory->Change.
Set the virtual memory minimum size to 2x the ammount of physical ram you have and set the max limit to 2x the minimum virtual limit, or 4x the physical ram.

Right click the start bar, task manager, performance. On the bottom of the tab it will say Phyiscal Memory (K). The total is the real RAM you have, in kilobytes. So basically take the number (my case) 522988 and put the decimal three to the left and round up. 523mb, or 512MB for me.
