w124 mirror mod
I am almost done with my w124 mirror mod. Using a w202 mirror, I TIG welded the Stock w124 mirror base onto the 202 mirror ball. I then drilled out a core so I could run the wires. Wrapped the entire thing in fiberglass, sanded, bondo, sand, prime, sand, etc... Looks excellent and stock. I will be using the auto dimming wires run over to the left mirror so it dims as well when this mirror dims.

Matt, I sure can. I have some pictures but where can I load them? As for a write up, You will need a w202 mirror with 5 wires if you want to retain the left mirror dimming mod. To use this, you will need a replaement left mirror with dimming. This was not made for the w124 so I am installing 202 folding mirrors. You will need to cut the rubber off the stock 124 mirror. Pull the ball head out of the mirror and cut the end of the ball head off. Then take your 202 mirror apart and cut the end of that off. You will need to TIG weld the 202 mirror ball onto the stock 124 base. Finish it off by grinding off some of the metal and making it smooth. From here you can either wrap it in fiberglass or just use bondo directly on the metal and smooth it out. You will also need to drill a hole through the shaft of the 124 mirror base. This is for the wires. I have some pics if anyone can post.

Picture shows test fitting the mirror onto the car. Rear of the mirror is pryed open carefully preventing any scratches. Home link portion is removed temp so it doesn't dangle around.

This pic shows the mirror almost finished. The red stuff is spot putty. If you do decide to wrap the mirror in FG, it's a lot more work. You can probably just smooth the bare metal mount and fill any imperfections with bondo and sand. The FG makes the base a little thicker. It's much harder to finish with FG. You will need some basic knowledge on FG to work with it. There are plenty of places on the net with information. It's really messy as well. The raw product is very rough looking until it was filled with bondo and sanded. Expect several hours of work in finishing the base. Lots of sanding was requiored. A demel is a good tool to use initially. When the base is looking more neat, hand sanding is preferred as it's more precise. Once the primer is applied, any imperfections can be visualized and filled with spot putty and resanded. I will be using a SEM bumpy lookin paint that has a consistance similar to ABS plastic.

As for wiring, there are 5 wires on the 202 mirror. 3 are pink which are used to dim the drivers side mirror. I will be using these as well when I add the 202 folding mirrors. The brown wire is ground and grey/blue is power. Homelink is programmed using standard instructions found on this site. The small visor above the mirror is also mountable since the stock base was used. All wires remain hidden inside the shaft of the mirror.

Many people have tried to order it with no luck. I too have tried myself in USA and in Germany with no luck. Plus the mirror I have has homelink and capable of dimming the drivers side mirror unlike the 124 original mirror. Also, the mirror I am using is actually a stock C class mirror.

That mirror like many others (SLK, CLK, S Class, E Class, C Class) will work, this one is a older desgin that has lock/unlock LED's integrated into it (auto dimming as well) but it does not have homelink.
These mirrors will snap into place as-is, leaving you a little gap at the front (mini sunvisor can go there)
