Now you see why MBZ dropped the unlimited warranty. on their cars. They were losing so much money to the dealerships to maintain them. Its a sign of the times when its all about the buck.Bling Bling-Klunk Klunk

Sounds like they are relying on the name alone to support them instead of quality of car...

Sooner or later it will come to a head and they will get back to basics or fall under completely and then even chrysler will try and find a way out...

dont forget that its a biased report, the report is based on all the equipment within the car and since mercedes has more gadgets, they will fail more often. Mercedes is still a decade ahead of its time technology wise but toyota and honda employ reliable systems developped over time to fix all the glitches.

Every new MB I have driven has pleased me aesthetically due to their build quality and they still have the heart of older versions but they have been refined.

wow, the force runs wild with this forum. The force of bandwagon and BS. Those reports are HEAVILY biased and in reality, on average every car in that range will have similar results, it just depends on the sample and the luck of the draw. I know some people with W220's and W211's that have no issues and I have friends with lexus' with major problems ( besides their boring as he11 exteriors and ride )

When I bought my 95 E420 in 2004 (1 owner) I brought it to SF MBZ dealer and was told they didn't want to work on such an "old car" (10 yrs) and if I insisted (My ex wife works there) It would be a week before they could even look at it. The bays were full of new cars. My ex works in billing and told me all their invoices are warranty work and they refer everyone else out to local shops. Again thats why they dropped the warranty that they used to offer. I agree a lexus is a boring car and a boring ride but I think benz took a dip in craftmanship after the 95 and as far as cars on my want list its the 96 e420 I don't think I am ready to invest in anything newer. But there is the excitment of each new offering from the star that still gets the heart pumping that I won't deny. Just my humble thoughts.

Allways seems kinda funny to me how they can determine reliability on 2006/2007 car models. Do they go 10 years into the future to get their stats or what?!

CR's basic approach is just to report whatever comes back in the surveys. Because of the lag time in their process, their data on 2006 models is actually based on cars that have been owned an average of 90 days. Similarly, the verdict on 2005s is based on just over a year's experience, on average. And they will base a verdict on as little as a month or two of data. Which wouldn't be so bad, except they never make it clear when this is the case.

As much as CR evaluates others, hardly anyone evaluates CR. Doing my best. You can read a couple of my critiques here:

Shortcomings of Consumer Reports

Problems with Consumer Reports' survey

Now, I doubt the problems with CR's methods can explain MB's showing. But the approach I'm taking in my own research will do two things:

1. Make it much clearer how large the difference between Mercedes and the competition is. Over a five-year period, are we talking one extra trip to the shop? Five? Ten? I suspect the number is lower than most people think.

My research will provide absolute numbers, including "trips to the shop."

2. CR releases results in November each year based on a spring survey. I'll be updating results quarterly about two months after the end of every quarter. With my system, if Mercedes does improve, it'll be apparent much more quickly.

The main thing I need is more participants. I'm not collecting data on any Mercedes models yet because not enough owners are signed up. Getting close with a few, though.

Yes, and he's correct. How does Chrysler have anything to do with mercedes problems? It's not like you build an e-class in the same plant as a sebring, or share parts. MB parts go to Chrysler....not the other way. MB is responsible for crappy quality....not chrysler.....their quality dropped in 96 with the W210...before Chrysler was involved.

Don't believe the hype

08 Lexus GS350 AWD. 08 Lexus RX350 AWD - wife's. 94 MBZ E320 - still have it.
I love it when people say, "Oh, those reviews are so biased". Of course, this borard is not biased at all. I agree that Mercedes still looks very good, but as far as the quality is concerned, I am seriuosle thinking about one of those boring Lexuses, particularily GS 350.

I can care less about all this quality issue crap, MB is back to making cars the way they used to pre 96' , heck, they've even added the good ol' star emblem/hood star combination again a very subtle sign that they're going back to their roots

Tell me about it! I was behind an S65 tester from Herb Chambers Mercedes down the street in cambridge, and the only way to describe was

"OH-MY-GOD!"

it was one of the most beautiful cars I've laid eyes on this year, pictures do the new S no justice at all.

^^ word. That's one thing I definitely have to say about the new MB's. They look much much better in person than they do in pictures... except for the R-class which is disgusting no matter how you look at it.
