M103 Oil filter issues

M103 Oil filter issues

When I change my oil on my m103, it has a more typical hardshell oil filter like an american car, unlike most mercedes that have a filter element in a permanent housing. I am not a fan of this m103 oil filter, anyways, whenever I change my oil, I have a problem of the oil filter not draining all the way. The filter is inverted next to the steering box, and unlike on my 400E which drained perfectly so there was no mess, this doesn't. Has anyone else had this issue on their m103, is there a check valve that might need replacing, or is there a trick to this that I don't know about.

Poke a hole in the top of the filter. This will let it drain more into the oil pan and have less mess.

What I've learned from another forum is to loosen the filter a quarter turn, then drain the oil. That's what I used to do when I had my 300E.

The reason your filter holds so much oil is because it has an anti-drainback valve built into it. It prevents the oil from seeping back into the engine and pushing the deposits back. It also depends what brand filter you get too. Bosch, Mobil1, and K&N usually have them.

only use Mann Filters for all of the benzo's in the stable/family.

You should try a K&N. The ability of using a 1" socket makes filter changing a breeze. No more slipping and messing around with those pastic or strap filter wrenches.

non metric, how neanderthalic.... lol, j/k. I am tired of using the special wrench for the oil filter.
