ABS Light

My ABS light used to come on intermittently and then went away for about 1 year. Just left the shop to get Tranny Cooler Lines replaced and now the light has been on constantly.

Any input as to what the usual cause of this is?

During the times it was on/off on/off were you having starting problems? If so, could be a bad OVP fuse/relay.

a bad OVP fuse will cause your ABS light to remain lit, and depending on the area where you live, you could not tell you have a bad fuse as some suffer cold starts and others suffer hot start issues.

I called the stealership about an OVP relay and/or blown fuse within. They said the 93 400E did not have an OVP???? Isn't the OVP by the battery in the 400E and not near the firewall w/ the other relays?

They tried to tell me I needed a new ICU @ $1200 part only. Gotta love those guys.

sorry I dont recall you saying it was a 400E

check the Base Module to the left of the engine, remove allen screws and there you will find three 10A fuses, check the one nearest you *looking in from the front of your engine*

perhaps that will settle it.

Thanks for the help! I will check this and hopefully the fuse is blown and it solves my problem when I replace it.

What the hell did people do before the internet forums?

A lot of times the sensor wires can get all crusty much like the wiring harness issues early MBs normally have. A quick fix to the problem is to just unplug the ABS sensor wires. You'll be fine and braking won't be compromised, you just won't have ABS. You could also fix it but at about $200 per wire I don't know how bad you need it.

I have a 1992 300e and my abs light would come on everytime at speeds between 70mph and 80mph and remain on until I turn my car off then on again. At all speeds below 70mph the light would never come on . Then bought 4 new wheels and tires 2 weeks ago and havn't seen this problem again. Just wondering what could of been causing this problem.

I would bet the tires were different sizes, either mis-matched or unevenly worn. That would cause the speed sensors to get false readings as though one tire was slipping. Maybe that can cause the light to come on. The difference in speeds between tires was probably not significant until reaching higher speeds.

If you just unplug the sensor cables, will the ABS-light stay on then? Is there any way to put out the ABS-light, without fysically removing it?

Whould be nice if i was light on before starting the engine like all other warning lights, but then black when engine started.

^ Not possible....You can just remove the bulb if you don't want to fix the problem right now.

1993 500E
I drive a 93 500E and i was having abs issues, usually when starting the car after sitting
for a day or so. This happened for about 5 years and then it started happening while
moving. Total cost was $400 with a core exchange and the car has been running perfectly
since. I got the TBA from 4mercedes.com.
