Stuck Oil Filler Cap

I recently discovered that the oil filler cap is stuck on my 1992 300te.

I've had many cars in my 30 years of driving, but never had a stuck cap before!

I've tried to get it off using both hands but the sucker won't budge.

There are also 2 tiny cracks on opposite sides of the cap, so I don't want to make them worse, though I presume the cap is shot if it's not coming off.

Is this something that an oil-change shop can remove, as I'm due for a change anyway?

Or are they going to refer me to a Benz dealer, or regular repair shop?

Anyone had experience with this?

I giggle, use wisegrips or something to grab onto it so that you have leverage, then twist. They are sometimes hard to get off. I really dont think its E.R. worthy. If the cap is already broken, get a new one from benz, something like $18.

Best of luck and welcome to the forum

This is not uncommon. I would order a new one either online or from the dealer and then use a wrench to grab it and twist it off.

My cap got stuck as well. I wedged an old key underneath the cap, to loosen it up.

I got a replacement cap from a local repair shop for $6.

I am all for having the right tool for the job, but in my case, I just use a rag and an adjustable wrench

Be extremely careful when using a wrench or any other tool when trying to pry the cap off. If not you are not carefull you will end up braking the cap into a million pieces which will all end up inside your engine -NOT GOOD.

Use a rag that has sufficient material for you to just lay it on top of your cap.

Press down slightly then "twist". The cloth should give you enough leverage so that by pressing down on it, it will fill the entire cap without the use of edges for leverage, otherwise you're going to rip off the fin and will end up with a skeleton of what used to be your cap in the filler hole.

Other than that I would take Omar's (oneil) advice.

Stant makes a metal oil filler cap to fit Mercedes engines. They look the same as the old style metal Mercedes cap (up to the late 1980's). Advance Auto has them or you can order from their website.

The words "filler" and "filter" are different!

After I chipped mine by using channellocks on it, I made a remover from a short section of 2 by 4. I chipped out the wood for a perfect fit and keep it by the battery. I heard others have done the same.

It looks like your car is a pre 1990 model. Do you have the metal or plastic filler cap?

The metal ones are very easy to remove.

I had a metal one, thought it was tacky and got hot as hell when trying to top off.

So I got the plastic one from the 190, I LOVE it.

It changes all the time
I've removed oil caps from every MB engine made from 1953 to about 1995, and the M103 engine is the only model with oil caps that are often difficult to remove.I just use big pliers when I run into a sticking cap.

On M103 and M104, I can remove the plastic oil filler caps with both hands. On the M112, pliers are needed to remove the plastic ones.

The metal caps are much easier to remove.
