fuel additive

any of you guys out there hear about adding 1/4 cup of pure acetone per 10 gallons of gas and getting about a 25% increase in milage? the (pure) acetone is supposed to help vaporize the gas. i read a short article on this in a malaysian car magazine. i won't even think of trying this in my car. but do you guys think there is any credibilty in this claim?

It is BS. Even saw them disprove the theory on Myth Busters.

BS in addition to being potentially harmfull for your car.
Acetone is a very strong organic solvent capable of dissolving many plastics and other petroleum based vinyls (like in a fuel pump, gaskets, fuel hoses, etc)
Keep your acetone as a nail polish remover.

It is very common in the United States too. Actually about half the gas sold in America is E10, and it's the only gas that you can legally get in Minnesota (besides E85). It burns cleaner and supposedly boosts performance and mileage. I recently did a project on ethanol blends, it's really pretty amazing. E10 is safe for use in all makes and models of cars. (or there would be a lot of angry drivers in Minnesota).

It changes all the time
You could add technical grade Zylene for a bit more power. It is an aeromatic hydrocarbon that was removed from the fuel about 15 years ago. When it was removed octane rating in gas went down and the cetane rating of diesel went up. The spin off cost was the removal of the hudrocarbon allowed the diesel seals to shrink causing severe diesel leaks in pumps, etc.
